Chapter 18
At the hospital, after a preliminary examination, the doctor helped Cynthia into a wheelchair and handed her a series of test forms.
“Once your family pays downstairs, you can go straight to the second floor for your tests, the doctor explained. “Come back here when you’re done, and I’ll continue with the next steps“)
Cynthia lay on the hospital bed, clutching the forms, unmoving.
The doctor looked up, finally asking. “Where’s your family?”
“I’m sorry. I don’t have any family in Cloudcrest City”
Her eyes were downcast, rain–soaked hair still dripping onto her shoulders. Her voice was raspy, betraying exhaustion and a hint of despair.
the elevator
Suddenly, someone gripped the wheelchair handles and pushed her toward the
Startled, Cynthia turned to look. Her gaze collided with a pair of deep, enigmatic eyes.
A man glanced at her without a word. One hand steered her wheelchair, the other held a phone as he spoke in a low, businesslike tone.!!
He wore a long black overcoat over a perfectly tailored charcoal suit that accentuated his tall, lean frome X
Catching her staring, he ended his call and slipped the phone into his coat pocket, radiating authority and composure X
Cynthia’s lips parted, surprise and embarrassment flickering across her face, “Mr. Holloway… what are you doing here?!
Dominic didn’t answer. His dark gaze swept the comidor, then settled on her. Without warning, he draped his coat over her head, shielding her from the lingering damp.
“So this is what Miss Tremaine meant when she said you’d take Cloudcrest City by storm and be surrounded by loyal followers?”
Cynthia yanked the coat off, her face freezing in shock.
That was the bold promise she’d made to her sister when she’d insisted on staying in Cloudcrest City, giving up her claim to the Tremaine family fortune. She never imagined her words would reach Dominic’s ears X
Now she kept her head down, cheeks burning with shame.ß
Perhaps unwilling to let her stew in silence, Dominic asked, almost lazily, “So, where are all your loyal followers?”
She shrank even smaller in her seat, wishing she could disappear.X
On the second floor, the waiting area outside the exam rooms was packed.
Dominic waited with her in the comidor, fielding one business call after another
Assistant
Shaw soon arrived with the payment receipt. Dominic stepped away to a quieter spot to take yet another call.
Cynthia took the paperwork, murmuring her thanks.!!
Assistant Shaw waved it off politely, but his eyes kept darting her way, as if he wanted to ask something but couldn’t find the words.
Cynthia just felt mortified. She silently hoped he wouldn’t start questioning her
The hush between them grew awkward, heavy.
Just then, Father Benedict, head bent over a medical report, emerged from the ultrasound room with Giselle beside him.
Cynthia glanced up, a cold, wry smile tugging at her lips as she crumpled the forms in her hand. She pulled out her phone and dialed Benedict
Across the hall, Benedict’s phone buzzed. He frowned at the screen.
Giselle leaned over, saw Cynthia’s name, and urged softly, “You should answer. Maybe she needs something.
Benedicts tense expression softened. He picked up. I’m busy at the office right now. What is it?”1⁄2
Cynthia gripped her phone tightly, her voice cool and quiet. “I didn’t realize VistaSphere Group had moved their offices to the hospital.”
Her words carried across the corridor. Assistant Shaw politely shifted aside, freeing Benedict from Cynthia’s pointed stare.
Benedict stopped short, the guilt flickering in his eyes impossible to miss.
