Chapter 25
Cynthia’s cool gaze swept over Giselle’s pleading face, her words drifting out, slow and unhurried.
“You can’t even handle something as simple as serving tea and water?”
“In that case, let her go.
Giselle’s eyes instantly filled with tears, her lips trembling as she fought to hold them back.
Father Benedict frowned, but didn’t give an answer right away!
Cynthia’s lips curled ever so slightly as she shot a frosty glance at the man beside her. “What’s wrong? Getting soft hearted now?”
Benedict’s eyes darkened with restraint, his voice low and unreadable. “Cynthia, you once said you wanted VistaSphere Group to be a place where people feel welcome and at ease. If you fire someone over a single mistake, doesn’t that leave everyone else walking on eggshells, terrified of making the smallest misstep?“)
He threw her own words back at her, hoping to comer her.
Cynthia lifted her eyes to meet his, her gaze cold and indifferent. “Wasn’t it you who said I could let her go at any time if she upset me? Well, I’m upset now.
Benedict fell silent, a deep frown creasing his brow as he stared at Cynthia, frustration and hesitation flickering in his eyes.!
Cynthia simply met his gaze, the faintest hint of amusement in her eyes, She showed no sign of backing down.
The conference room fell into an uneasy hush.
Giselle’s quiet sobbing finally broke the silence. Her voice was barely more than a whisper. I’m sorry, Cynthia, I was wrong. Please, I’ll clean it up right away. Don’t fire me, please.”
She crouched quickly to the floor picking up the shattered pieces of porcelain. As soon as her fingers touched a sharp edge, a bead of blood bloomed on her fingertip. She winced but didn’t dare look Benedict’s way. Head bowed, she kept gathering the shards with shaking, bloodied hands, her sobs coming in soft waves–like a fragile flower battered by wind and rain.”
Cynthia glanced sidelong at the man beside her.”
Benedict’s restraint was wearing thin, anger flaring in his eyes.1
“Cynthia! Must you be so unreasonable? She didn’t do anything serious. You’re firing her without even listening to her side? This is VistaSphere Group, not Valmont Holdings. I will not let you act on a whim!“B
Cynthia only smiled, watching his outburst as if she were a bystander to someone else’s drama.
“Do you need me to remind you there are security cameras in here? Should I pull up the footage and show everyone in the company what she was doing under the table during an official meeting?”
Benedict fell silent, his protest dying on his lips.
Giselle froze, clutching the broken pieces, her sobs silenced.
Cynthia let out a soft, mocking laugh. “Or is it, Mr. Shepard, that you actually enjoy this kind of thrill?
Giselle’s face flamed red, and she quickly tried to take all the blame. “Cynthia, it was my fault–I lost my head, I didn’t know what I was thinking
Benedict, afraid she’d only make things worse, closed his eyes for a moment before cutting her off. He turned to Cynthia. “Enough. III see to it that she leaves I
Giselle went pale, staring at Benedict in shock, tears brimming again,
Benedict refused to look at her, his tone softer than before as he addressed Cynthia. “Are you satisfied now?”
But Cynthia found it all tiresome. She was about to get up and leave when Giselle suddenly dropped to her knees.!!
“Cynthia, please, I’m begging you–don’t fire me! My parents are both sick. They need expensive medication every month, and I’m still paying off my student loans. I have so many bills to cover….
“Please, let me stay at VistaSphere Group. I promise, I’ll never step out of line again.”
Now she was crying in earnest, all the arrogance she’d shown in her previous messages to Cynthia gone without a trace.
Out of the corner of her eye, Cynthia noticed Benedict’s hand clench at his side. There was no emotion on his face, but she could sense the turmoil beneath the surface.
He must have felt her gaze, because Benedict tried to play it cool, reaching out to pull her gently into his arms.E
