Chapter 30
Cynthia stood silently by the door, waiting for Dominic to finish his game.
He was completely absorbed in his phone, so focused that Cynthia found herself drawn in, tempted to watch over his shoulder.
Dominic maneuvered his character to assist a teammate–he had decent game sense, she noted. But the moment his avatar arrived on the battlefield, he poked his head out and was instantly obliterated by the opposing team.
As the game screen dimmed in defeat, Dominic’s expression darkened to match.
Almost immediately, his teammates initiated a surrender vote.
For a split second, the room was eerily quiet.8
Dominic stubbomly tapped “decline, then finally looked up at Cynthia. His voice was low and clipped. “Come
With that, he tumed and walked into the room, still clinging to his phone as if letting go would cost him dearly.
He sat heavily on the sofa, his face clouded like a man who’d just lost a major business deal.
His character respawned, Revitalized, he charged in again, only to be flattened within seconds. The screen went gray once more,
This time, the enemy team stormed their base, but instead of finishing the game, they just stood outside the final tower, spamming the <recall” button and taunting Dominic’s team,
Anyone could see the frustration building in Dominic’s expression.
They suffered yet another wipeout, and his mood grew only darker
Cynthia awkwardly averted her gaze, but when the next respawn came, she couldn’t help sneaking another look. Quietly, she critiqued his performance in her mind: Decent awareness, terrible mechanics.
Meanwhile, the enemy kept baiting them, refusing to end the match, provoking even the calmest player’s temper.
After yet another death, Dominic flicked his eyes upward in exasperation–only to catch Cynthia watching him with a mix of disappointment and mild disdain.8
Cynthie hesitated, then finally broke the silence. “Do you want me to try?
Dominic raised an eyebrow “You think you’re better?”
Cynthia pressed her lips together. Years ago, she’d been hooked on this game, racking up national–level rankings with several characters. But Father Benedict had always disapproved, insisting video games were a waste of time and energy. Over time, his attitude rubbed off on her, and she’d all but quit.&
Judging by the enemy’s sloppy plays, she guessed Dominic’s rank was nothing special, In these low–tier matches, even after so long away from the game, she’d have no trouble.
“All you need are hands,” she said, oozing confidence.”
Dominic, half skeptical, Handed her the phone.
She snatched it up just as his character respawned. Her fingers danced expertly across the controls–but before she could even leave the base, the enemy team destroyed their crystal.
The word “Defeat flashed across the screen, Cynthia stared at it, lips twitching in frustration. All that pent–up energy with nowhere to go &
Dominic watched her in silence from the sofa.X
Their eyes met. Cynthia’s face burned with embarrassment–she could practically feel the heat–radiating from her cheeks.
After a few moments, she decided she had to defend herself. “That wasn’t my fault
Dominic nodded slightly, his tone flat. “Yeah. Even if we lost with you playing, it wasn’t your fault.”
Cynthia fell silent.
He hadn’t sald–anything accusatory, but to Cynthia, every word felt like an unspoken reproach, making her want to melt into the floor with shame
