Chapter 34
At last, someone had finally managed to rein Dominic in, and Assistant Shaw felt as though a ray of sunlight had pierced the clouds.
He headed into Dominic’s walk–in closet, determined to pick out Dominic’s outfit for tomorrow just as Pearl Singleton had instructed. Show searched through every inch of the closet, but the black wool overcoat was nowhere to be found. Suddenly, a detail flashed in his memory. He lowered his voice and said to Dominic, “Hey, I think that coat ended up with Miss Tremaine.”
Dominic’s brow furrowed.
Just thinking of Pearl’s loud, dramatic ways–and her fondness for tattling on him to his parents and grandfather–gave him a headache. The last time he upset Pearl, she’d complained about him to his mother, which landed him a month’s worth of miserable blind dates.
“Get it back from her Dominic said.
After leaving Dominic’s penthouse, Cynthia drove back to her grandmother’s cottage on the edge of town. On the way, she called Jocelyn, asking her to help find new buyers interested in acquiring shares of VistaSphere Group.
She held 51% of the company’s shares–enough for a controlling stake–but selling the entire package all at once wouldn’t be easy. Not every company had the resources or boldness of Holloway Enterprises. If she split the shares into smaller portions to sell, word would get out, and Benedict would hear about it for sure,
Given her current urgency, Holloway Enterprises was actually her best shot. Cynthia knew that as well as anyone, but Dominic’s attitude: bad left her uncertain. She only had ten days left–after that, she’d have to return to the Capital.
Just before the call ended, Jocelyn promised to think of a solution
Back at the cottage, Cynthia collapsed onto a lounge chair in the garden, utterly drained. She was starting to regret letting her pride get the best of her–storming out of the negotiation without closing the deal.
Right then, Assistant Show called. Cynthia glanced at the unfamiliar number and swiped to decline the call.
A few seconds later, the same number rang again. She rejected it once more. For the past six months, she’d been living quietly at home, the company wouldn’t be contacting her, and no one else ever called. It had to be a telemarketer.
But the caller was relentless, ringing several more times. Annoyed, Cynthia finally picked up, pressed the phone to her ear, and snapped, “Spit it out if you’ve got something to say.”
There was a stunned silence on the other end.8
Dominic silently handed the phone to Assistant Shaw &
Shaw looked puzzled. “Miss Tremaine’s still not answering?” he muttered
Dominic shot him a look and shoved the phone into his hand. “She just told you to spit it out, so do it.
Only then did Shaw notice the call had actually gone through. He hurriedly lifted the phone to his ear, “Hello, Miss Tremaine, this is-”
But Cynthia had already overheard his and Dominic’s exchange. Her face froze as she replied mechanically, “Hello“0
Shaw explained why he was calling and offered to come by for the coat. After all, they’d helped her at the hospital that day; Cynthia couldn’t possibly let them go out of their way again. She quickly said she’d bring the coat over herself.
Maybe this was her chance to bring up the VistaSphere Group shares with Dominic again. This time, she was determined to swallow her pride and get it done.
“Thank you. Miss Tremaine, that’s very kind,” Shaw said.”
Cynthia replied politely, “No, I should be the one thanking you–1
Before she could finish, the call was cut off, Staring at the screen, Cynthia was momentarily speechless.)
Meanwhile, Shaw turned to Dominic, bewildered, as Dominic snatched the phone and ended the call
Without missing a beat, Dominic opened a game app on his phone and said, “Took you long enough to get to the
