Don't come back - Chapter 28
Ch. Ch 28 Don’t come back Ch 28
Our eyes met, and for a moment, it felt like another lifetime.
In my memory flashed images of my big brother who skipped work to attend my parent–teacher meetings, my second brother
who stood on stools to cook meals for me.
The mischievous, playful young Ember.
Now, we had all grown old.
They tried to smile at me, though it seemed they might cry instead.
After twelve years apart, they watched me intently from a distance.
But in the end, they didn’t take a single step closer.
I returned their smile, feeling only peace within.
Twelve years hadn’t erased the grievances and hatred.
Instead, they had finally brought me true acceptance.
As the press conference ended, I left with my colleagues and mentors.
Behind me, suddenly came a man’s hoarse and urgent voice: “Em… Ember.”
How long had it been since my brothers called me by my name?
I couldn’t remember.
My colleagues noticed and left first.
Derek gently patted my shoulder: “Ember, I’ll wait for you outside.”
I nodded.
Turning around, I saw Axel and Ryker hurrying anxiously toward me.
Two steps away, they seemed afraid to come closer and stopped.
I looked at them, followed by a long silence.
Until Axel finally spoke hoarsely: “How have you been all these years?”
I replied gently: “I’ve been well.”
Ryker struggled to contain himself, but enormous pain and regret showed in his eyes:
“About Willow, we know everything now.
“Ember, we… we’re so sorry.”

My heart remained undisturbed.
I simply said: “It’s okay. It’s all in the past.”
Axel’s face trembled. After a moment, he cautiously asked: “Could we… have a meal together?”
I shook my head: “I don’t think so.”
The hope in their eyes instantly dimmed.
I didn’t linger, turning to leave.
Behind me, Axel’s broken voice rose again: “I’m sorry.”
I paused briefly.
Then I walked out of the venue without looking back.
