I watched as he closed his eyes.
The heart monitor gradually flattened into a long, endless straight line.
When I left the hospital, it was snowing heavily again.
Derek waited outside, draping a coat over my shoulders as I emerged.
As I was about to get in the car, something made me turn around. I saw Ryker behind me.
His hair had begun to gray, his features weathered by time.
Snowflakes fell on his hair and shoulders.
Through the snowstorm, I said to him: “Take care of yourself from now on.”
His eyes, which had just stopped crying, suddenly turned red again.
He opened his mouth, but countless words ultimately became just one phrase: “You too.”
I opened the car door and got in.
As the car drove away, the lonely, slightly hunched figure gradually disappeared from view.
Snowflakes fell on the car window, blurring my vision.
In my daze, I saw our home again..
A snowy Full Moon Festival, all five of us gathered around the dinner table.
Mother took out glasses, Father poured wine.
Under the warm lights, five glasses clinked together, followed by the family’s joyful wishes.
“May we always be together in happiness in the years to come.”
