My father raised his hands, pleading with the masked intruders. 

“Take whatever you want–just don’t touch my daughters!” 

The leader, a hulking figure with piercing eyes, spoke through what sounded like a voice modulator. 

“This bitch dragged our idol’s name through the mud. She’ll pay in blood.” 

He yanked a hammer from his coat, swinging it toward Julienne’s hand- 

“Freeze! Police!” 

Dad’s friend burst in.

The masked men released Julienne, scrambling toward the window before plunging into the inky sea. By the time we reached the ledge, the night had swallowed them whole. 

Julienne collapsed into our parents‘ arms, sobbing. 

“Mom, Dad–don’t blame Evangeline. She thought my fans were the ones who crippled her. She just… wanted revenge.” 

Her voice cracked. “This is my fault. Stop punishing her!” 

A flicker of guilt crossed my brother’s face before hardening into rage. “Evangeline, have you lost your mind? Julienne had nothing to do with your attack!”

My parents‘ gazes turned glacial. “You brought this on yourself,” Mother hissed. “And instead of remorse, you sicced thugs on your sister? You’re monstrous.” 

They shielded Julienne as the crowd’s jeers rained down–ungrateful, wicked, cut her off. 

I clawed at their retreating backs. “Please- let me explain-” 

The lock clicked. 

“Stay there and think about what you’ve done.” 

Hours later, after a flurry of doctors confirmed Julienne’s safety, Father finally waved a hand. 

“Release Evangeline. A night in isolation should’ve knocked sense into her.”

“Sir–Miss Evangeline’s gone. She jumped overboard last night. All we found was her phone… and a recording that proves everything”
