Chapter 10
“This is nothing but self–torture. She must have been rescued by them,” Julienne insisted, breathless from chasing after him.
Father seized her arm, his eyes darkening like a storm. “She threw herself into the sea to prove her innocence, and you still won’t let her rest?”
Brother’s fury erupted. He wrenched Julienne toward the window, his grip iron.
“Evangeline couldn’t swim. That water was freezing, her body already battered–imagine the agony of that plunge! You dare slander her? Then feel the sea yourself before you speak another word!”
Julienne shrieked as he forced her halfway

over the ledge, her fingers clawing at the sill. “Brother, stop! 1–I can’t swim!”
A tremor ran through him. He yanked her back, his face stricken. “What did you just say?”
Father looked bewildered; Mother wept silently, her hands trembling as the siblings clashed.
“Enough, Cormac,” Father pleaded. “We’ve lost Evangeline. Must we lose Julienne too?”
Mother’s voice cracked. “They’re both your sisters. You can’t destroy one for the other.”
Cormac’s palm struck Julienne’s cheek before she could flinch. “Then explain this, Mother,’ he spat. “Ten years ago, she swore she couldn’t swim–so who pulled me from the waves? Who?”

Julienne pressed a hand to her burning face, lips sealed.
He ripped at her blouse like a man possessed.
“Stop!” She thrashed, but fabric tore, baring unmarked skin.
Cormac staggered. “How…?” The fire in his eyes guttered to ash. “The doctor said you’d hit the rocks saving me–that the scar would never fade.”
Father paled. “Cormac, you swore it was Julienne who rescued you. What madness is this?”
Cormac dragged his hands through his hair, voice raw. “That day at the beach–the waves took me under. I was drowning,

half–conscious, but I heard shouting. Someone shoved a life jacket at me, dragged me ashore. By the time I woke in the hospital, Julienne was there, crying, her back bandaged. She told me she’d crashed into the reef saving me–showed me the blood-” His gaze sharpened, locking onto Julienne. “But you can’t swim. And your skin is flawless. Who was it?”
Julienne’s guilt flickered before she lifted her chin. “It was me! I–I held the lifeboard! There was no one else there!”
