Chapter 13
Cormac raced back to the cruise ship without pause, his breath ragged with
urgency.
His hands shook as he snatched the phone from his subordinate, thumb jamming the play button. Julienne’s voice slithered out–a venomous, self–satisfied laugh.
“Evangeline, did you really think playing the victim would save you? You’ll never win against me.
“Still haven’t figured it out, have you? My brother had the doctor replace your vocal cords… with a dog’s.
“Now, even if you try to sing, all that’ll come out is woof, woof, woof.”

The men around her erupted in cruel laughter.
I must have begged for something–her cackling grew wilder, unhinged.
“Leave? Where could you go, broken like this? I trust no one but myself. That’s why…
I want to watch our whole family loathe you.”
A violent thud. The phone clattered to the ground.
Then–Julienne’s shrill scream. My brother and parents burst through the door just as the hired men switched masks, pretending to be my outraged fans.
My brother’s face drained of color.

that day.
None recognized Evangeline’s name.
These weren’t star–chasers. They were actors in Julienne’s twisted play.
His grip tightened around the phone, knuckles white, teeth clenched so hard they threatened to splinter. After a shuddering breath, he turned to find our parents–they needed the truth first.
Once Father swallowed his heart medication, my brother played the recording.
“How-?”
Our parents recoiled. The audio was undeniable: Julienne’s manic giggles, her orchestrated taunts.
“That viper!” Mother’s voice cracked.

“Twenty years we raised her–and she butchered our daughter!”

Father’s face purpled with rage. “Call the police. Have her arrested–now!”
My brother gave a hollow laugh. “And if she drags us down with her? I hired the men who hurt Evangeline. She might know.”
Silence.
Mother collapsed into sobs. “So we let her die for nothing?”
He clawed at his hair. “I–I deleted her drafts at the hospital. To protect Julienne. But all I did was hand her the knife.
“Those stolen manuscripts? Julienne’s been practicing Evangeline’s handwriting for years. I was too blind to see it.”

Father gasped like a drowning man. “Find her. Bring my Evangeline home. I’ll spend the rest of my life making this right.”
My brother nodded. The search intensified.
Ten days later, they heard my voice again.
