Chapter 14
Seeing Cormac appear before me didn’t shock me in the slightest.
I’d only been feigning that desperate plunge into the sea–sooner or later, they’d all realize I wasn’t dead.
Now, under my new employer’s patronage, I’d just undergone surgery to reconstruct my shattered fingers and legs. My ruined vocal cords? Replaced with the finest synthetic ones money could buy, freeing my voice at last.
The doctor assured me that in six months, I might even manage a simple song–though the honeyed tones of my past would never
return.

The thought reignited the embers of fury in my chest as I glared at Cormac.
“What do you want?” My voice was colder than the ocean that had nearly claimed me.
He gaped, stunned to see me standing, speaking. When he lunged forward to grab my hand, I recoiled with a sharp jerk of my wrist.
“Sister, please-” His voice cracked. “I was wrong. I misunderstood everything. Come home. Mom and Dad are devastated.“.
“Mr. Montclair.” I let the name hang like a blade between us. “Your sister is Julienne. Not me. For years, you’ve all doted on her while treating me like an intruder. So I’ve done what you wanted–I’ve vanished. Don’t insult me by pretending otherwise now.”

Cormac paled. “We know–we know it was Julienne who hired those men that night. She’s been reckless since childhood, but this time… she nearly killed you. We’ve punished her. Just come back.”
A bitter laugh escaped me. I tapped the bandage at my throat, then raised my scarred fingers. “Nearly killed me? Look at what she’s done, Cormac. Do you really think I’ll let her walk away unscathed? When I’m healed, I’ll drag every secret into the light- starting with what’s mine.”
He opened his mouth, but I cut him off.
“Ten years ago, when the waves swept you under, who pulled you out?” I yanked up the back of my shirt, revealing the twisted scar. “Recognize this? Or did Julienne spin you another pretty lie?”

His knees buckled. Tears spilled down his face. “It was you? All this time-”
I dropped the fabric, my smile venomous. “You repaid the girl who saved you by abandoning her. How does it feel, knowing you’ve been worshiping a viper?”
When he tried to speak again, I shoved him toward the door.
My old contract had been under his company. Though I’d breached it, he’d waived the penalties. For a fleeting moment, I’d wondered if guilt had finally stirred his conscience.
But no. His next words stripped that delusion bare.
“Please,” he begged, “don’t humiliate Julienne publicly. Don’t expose what she

did.”
I turned my back and walked away–straight to the mentor who’d shown me kindness a decade ago, back when I still believed in redemption.
