Chapter 5

The words I’d been holding inside finally came out, and as I spoke, I could feel my heartbeat speeding up.

I thought I wouldn’t be affected by the death that was looming over me, but suddenly, all I wanted was to see more of this world.

The room fell silent, and all I could hear was my breath growing more frantic.

Just when I thought William wouldn’t say anything, he finally spoke. But his words… they sent my heart crashing into an abyss.

“Do you really think a lie like that is going to make us pity you, Isabella? You’re going to any lengths just to make us go home, aren’t you? You think we’re still as easily fooled

as we were when you were younger? Don’t forget how Mom, Dad, and Grandpa died,” he said coldly.

No. That wasn’t it. That wasn’t my fault!

I screamed those words in my head, but I couldn’t make a sound. Tears streamed down my face, falling onto the floor. I felt like a puppet, yanked around by invisible strings.

“I’m not lying. Please, do this for me. Please! Just one last time!” I begged, my voice breaking.

He hung up on me. Before he did, I faintly heard Sophie’s voice, filled with joy, calling his name on the other end of the line.

My earlier excitement vanished, replaced by emptiness. I stiffly sat back down at the table, imagining how my brothers treated her

-how they pretended to be her.

I felt like I was losing my mind. And in that moment, as I imagined myself playing the part of her, I couldn’t help but laugh. Laugh like a fool.

My laughter grew louder, more desperate, until it ended in strangled sobs.

Time passed, second by second, but no one came home. I waited until it was nearly midnight–three minutes left.

I started reflecting on my life, but it felt so simple, so plain. There didn’t seem to be much to remember. My life had been a tragedy from the moment I was born.

The minutes turned to seconds, and I slumped onto the table, the urn and photo beside me.

Five… four… three… two… one…

The countdown ended, and a dead silence surrounded me. The room fell completely silent–even the sound of my breathing disappeared.

And then, I heard the doorknob click.

Someone was back!
