Forgot What It Felt Like to Love Him - Chapter (11)

Christian stayed by my bedside every day.
<
He personally wiped my face.
He talked to me for long periods each day, trying to wake me up.
Mom and Dad never came, not once.
Willow, however, came a few times.
She said:
“Christian, you don’t need to sacrifice your life for Lily. Your time is measured in minutes, it’s too precious. I’ve found the best nursing hospital for Lily, you should go back to the
company.”
Christian quietly used a towel to wipe my hand.
Willow then said:
“Christian, my mom says the ninth of next month is an auspicious day, suitable for everything. Could you ask your father if we can get engaged that day? Because the engagement is quite complicated, I need to pick out my dress and arrange my styling in
advance.”
Christian tucked my blanket in.
Willow’s voice softened, and she took Christian’s hand, her voice choked:
“Christian, I know you care so much about Lily because of me. Our whole family is very grateful to you. But we have our own lives, everyone has their own fate. Perhaps, this is just Lily’s fate.”
By the end, Willow dabbed her tears.
Looking utterly heartbroken.
Christian finally looked up at her, speaking calmly:
“Willow, didn’t you say that your parents always favored Lily since childhood and gave you the cold shoulder, so you always tolerated everything and had to swallow your
grievances alone?”
“You said that even though Lily stole everything from you, you still loved her very much?”
“Then why, when the two of you had a fight, was it Lily who was kicked out of the house
and forced to wander around?”
“Why, when Lily has been sick for so long, haven’t your parents visited her even once?”
“Why, when Lily is lying on the bed, her life hanging by a thread, are you radiant every day, laughing joyfully for the cameras?”
“Willow, I’m starting to not understand you.”
In my hazy state, I smiled silently.
How clever Christian was.
Even if he didn’t like me before, didn’t believe my words.
But, with time, he would eventually understand many things.
Yet, seeing Willow’s awkward, uncomfortable, evasive expression.
I felt no satisfaction of seeing justice served.
When I needed him, he was stingy with his help.
Now, he was willing to stand up for me.
But I no longer cared.
