Goodbye Was Just the Beginning - Chapter 12
I waited for Evan in the restaurant’s main hall downstairs after the party.
Shawn Zimmerman, a friend from Pinehelm City, called me at that moment. He asked, “What have you been up to these days, Ru? The others and I haven’t seen you around much.”
“I have some private matters to deal with.”
“Oh, well, how about we meet up for a quick gathering?”
I laughed. “No, it’s okay. You guys can go ahead.”
“Wait, Ru. Please don’t hang up yet. It’s just… Well, it’s Jonathan. He’s in a foul mood tonight. He got drunk, and nobody can convince him to stop. If you’re free, you should drop by to check on him. I’m worried he’ll have gastrointestinal bleeding again.”
“You guys should call Evelyn, then.”
“Ru, Jonathan just kicked Evelyn out of here. We can all tell he still cares about you deeply. He regrets his actions.”
“Stop telling me these things, Shawn. He and I have already broken up.” I held my phone while speaking calmly. “From now on, what he does is none of my concern. You and the other should stop calling me, too.”
I had just said those words when I heard shuttling noises from the other end of the call. It sounded like someone had snatched Shawn’s phone. I didn’t want to deal with it, so I hang up.
That was when Jonathan’s voice rang. “Ruth, they’re the ones who decided to call you. I had nothing to do with it.”
He had always been cold and arrogant.
“Okay. Well, I’m hanging up.” I answered.
“Ruth,” Jonathan called out to me again. I could tell from his voice that he was very drunk.
If this had happened in the past, I would have felt sorry for him and tirelessly convinced him to stop drinking. However, I no longer had anything to do with him anymore. So, I hung up.
After thinking it through, blocked these friends of Jonathan’s from any contacts and socials. I only knew them because of him, anyway. Now that Jonathan and I hat broken up, I didn’t need to continue staying in contact with them.
“Ru,” Evan called, standing up.
He was slightly to the left in the massive and brightly lit hall. The lights shined onto his dashing face, almost creating a misty effect.
“Evan,” I answered. Before I could stand, he was already walking toward me.
There was a slight sway in his walk, possibly because he had drink too much
All concerns left my mind as I ran to hold him up. “Are you feeling unwell because you’ve had too much to drink?
Evan nodded slightly- I figured he had an awful headache from his frown and visibly pained expression. “My ride’s waiting outside, Ru. Please take me to the car.”
“Alright, I’ll bring you over.”
Evan was much taller than me. Because we clumsily stumbled several times during the short walk to his car.
When getting into the back of the car, I suddenly lost my balance and fell into his chest. A faint alcohol scent mixed with an overwhelming woody perfume enveloped me.
Eventually, I snapped out of my daze and was so flustered that I wanted to get up.
Yet, Evan hugged me just then. “Can I hold you for a little longer, Ru?”
