Goodbye Was Just the Beginning - Chapter 14
“Are you still drinking? Do you not care about your life anymore, Jonathan? Don’t you know everyone’s been worried sick about you these days?” said one of Jonathan’s friends.
He covered the bottle opening and urged, “I’ve just called Evelyn. She’s coming to take you home right away. Stop drinking, okay?”
All of a sudden, Jonathan found himself loathing Evelyn’s name. He shoved his friend away, causing the beer bottle to fall. “Who said you guys could call her? Did I allow her to come here?”
“She’s your girlfriend. Who else would we call if not her?”
“Who says she’s my girlfriend?” Jonathan snorted. “Shouldn’t you guys know who my girlfriend is?”
Jonathan’s friends looked at each other before one of them spoke up. “Jonathan, have you forgotten? You and Ru have already broken up…”
Another chimed in, “Yeah, you even announced in the group chat that we should acknowledge Evelyn as your girlfriend.
“Ru congratulated you and Evelyn before leaving the group chat. Besides, aren’t you and Evelyn about to be engaged?”
“We are engaged,” Jonathan snapped before telling the staff to open a new bottle.
“Jonathan, you really shouldn’t drink anymore…”
“Do you seriously think, I’d listen to you guys?” Jonathan refuted.
His friend replied “You’ve only ever listened to Ruth, You’d have obediently gone home with her long ago if she were still here. You wouldn’t do anything.”
One of his friends just took out their phone. “I’m calling Ru now. We can’t do anything if you won’t.”
Much to everyone’s shock, the call didn’t go through. Soon, each of them tried calling Ruth, but she had blocked all of their numbers.
The tension in the space was so thick that one could cut it with a knife.
Maybe she is just too upset, someone suggested.
One of his friends agreed. “That’s right. After all, Jonathan, you did break up with her in an extreme manner and get together with her stepsister.
“Anyone would feel aggrieved and unable to tolerate it if they were in her position. Plus, I heard she’s been living alone and away from her family all this time.”
Another friend chimed in. “It’s her mom’s death anniversary a while ago. My cousin saw her return from the cemetery. Her eyes were swollen from crying.”
Someone else suggested, “Why don’t you visit her at her apartment, Jonathan?”
When Jonathan recalled the day Ruth moved out of the Chillcott residence. She left with two massive luggage and never looked back.
That plate used to be Ruth’s home, Yet, it later became Evelyn’s and Portia’s Even Wallace became Evelyn’s dad.
As for Jonathan, he became enticed by the youthful and refreshing Evelyn at the time. He, too, cast Ruth aside like an old glove.
