Goodbye Was Just the Beginning - Chapter 16
“But I AM allergic to peaches! Dad knows it, too! Ruth made the housekeepers smear peach syrup all over my bed. Dad’s the one who found out about it…” Evelyn cupped her cheek while sniffling in aggrievement.
“How dare you continue to lie about it?” Jonathan suddenly stepped forward and grabbed Evelyn by her collar. He was tall, so he practically lifted her off the ground.
“Jon… let me go. I can’t breathe…”
Jonathan stared down at her, his handsome face gradually contorting. “Have you forgotten that you’re using Ruth’s favorite perfume? It’s also the perfume I bought her countless times in the past. I just forgot about it after some time…”
He let out a self-deprecating snort at the realization that he had forgotten many things.
Jonathan forgot how deeply Ruth had loved him and how much she cared about him over these years. He forgot about the three years they had loved each other and how much she had hoped to settle down with him.
It slipped his mind how Ruth shed silent tears in front of him when he broke up with her. She had also accepted her reality without fighting back at the time.
He forgot how kind and warm the woman once loved with all his heart was. He had forgotten how he had abandoned her even though he once cherished her like prize.
It seemed he was now being punished for forgetting too much…
“The main ingredients in this perfume are peach and gardenia. You ain’t be allergic to peaches. If so, why haven’t you had an allergic reaction to the peach perfume you’ve been using every day?”
Evelyn’s eyes grew wide while her face fumed ashen. Her entire body couldn’t stop trembling
“So, you’ve been lying since the beginning. You framed Ruth while lying to me and Mr. Chilcott! I must’ve been blind to have fallen for a vile, scheming woman like you, Evelyn!” Jonathan released hits grip on Evelyn’s collar before shoving her aside.
Evelyn fell limply to the floor. She tried to justify her actions but couldn’t think of not denying such strong evidence.
After all, she had indeed used the perfume daily. There was plausible reason.
“I’ll tell everyone the truth about you.” Jonathan glanced down at her for the last time and left while slamming the door.
Jonathan’s driver sped along the road.
Upon arriving at Ruth’s apartment, Jonathan noticed the lights weren’t on she could have fallen asleep, but he didn’t want to give up. He wanted to see her right now to apologize, admit his mistakes, and beg for her forgiveness.
Yet, Ruth never opened the door, no matter how much he rang her doorbell and knocked.
