Wallace, the dad who usually spoiled Evelyn rotten, didn’t even bother sparing her one glance. He waved dismissively, motioning for the bodyguards to kick Portia and Evelyn out like he was chasing away irksome houseflies.

Evelyn still refused to give up while walking out the gates. She hugged the doorpost, not wanting to let go while yelling at the top of her lungs. “Jonathan! You can’t do this to me… You can’t! I’m pregnant, and the child is yours! You have to be responsible for it!”

One could only describe her as crazed when she finished screaming those words. It was like she had lost her mind.

“Jonathan?” Wallace turned to look at him.

Jonathan only felt disgusted beyond words. He wanted to laugh but couldn’t. How could he have ever fallen in love with such a repulsive woman?

“Mr. Chilcott.” Jonathan walked over and looked at Wallace, whose hair had mostly turned white. “I never touched her. I swear.”

“That’s good to hear.” Wallace let out a relieved exhale before waving at his bodyguards to drag the two out.

Evelyn’s and Portia’s cries gradually grew softer until they could no longer be heard.

Meanwhile, the sun slowly set, its light surrounding the massive mansion.

Wallace’s and Jonathan’s sights settled on a big pile of fallen crabapple flowers. The crabapple trees had gone dormant, and it was unclear when they would bloom.

Those were Ruth’s mother’s favorite flowers.

Since her mother’s passing, Ruth had been caring for the crabapple trees alone. However, she was gone now, and the flowers were somehow aware of it, they had shockingly withered in the middle of spring.

Wallace wiped a tear from his eyes I’ve wronged Ru. I’ve wronged her and her mother, Jonathan, it’s all my fault for being an easily fooled old man

“I promised my wife I’d take good care of and love Ru, but I broke my promise. Do you think the universe will punish me for it?

“Ru must’ve been so hurt and felt so wronged…. Jonathan, My wife’s photo frame and photo has been fixed. I’ll also have someone renovate the house. Do you think Ru will still be willing to come home and live with me?”

Jonathan didn’t know, nor did he have the answer to that. Then again, maybe he knew the answer but was unwilling to admit it..

Standing beneath the evening sky, Jonathan could only suppress the sorrow in his heart and console Wallace.

“Mr. Chilcott, Ruth has always been forgiving_” Jonathan couldn’t bring himself to finish that sentence.

Jonathan and Wallace obviously knew Ruth’s forgiving nature. Yet, why did they pick on her and hurt her as if they were possessed back then?
