Chapter 7
A few days later, there was the Quinn family banquet.
Carla hadn’t wanted to go, but thinking of Jason’s grandfather, Greg Quinn, whom she hadn’t seen in a long time, she changed into a formal.
dress and went.
She was about to leave soon, and no matter what, she wanted to say goodbye to Greg.
As soon as she arrived at the old mansion, she saw Jason holding Kate’s hand, walking in under everyone’s watchful eyes.
At the Quinn’s family banquet, bringing Kate to attend was clearly a slap in her face.
But Carla no longer felt heartache or cared.
Ignoring the whispers and gossip, she went straight to Greg’s bedroom.
“Greg, Jason, and I are divorced.”
As soon as she entered, she got straight to the point, telling Greg about her plans to leave.
Upon hearing this, Greg suddenly sat up straight and quickly grabbed Carla’s hand: “Carla, are you angry at Jason? Listen to me. He really likes. you. The girl he’s with–there must be some misunderstanding.”
“Greg.” Carla gave a bitter smile. “Please don’t try to convince me. I’ve thought it through clearly. With everything he’s done to me recently, not matter what he thinks of Kate, there’s no chance between him and me anymore.”
Seeing the pain and resolve in her voice, Greg sighed deeply.
“Fine, then it’s his loss. Carla, remember, even if you and Jason are divorced, you will always be my beloved little girl. As long as I’m here, that girl will never set foot in the Quinn family!”
Carla’s nose tingled with emotion.
In her previous life, Greg had always protected her just like this.
“Greg, you should rest now.” She stood and said goodbye. “I’ll get you some water.”
Carla stepped out to pour a glass of water. When she returned and was about to knock on the door, she suddenly heard a muffled thud from
inside.
“You old bastard!” Kate’s voice came through the half–open door. “You still dare to stop me from entering? I’ll kill you!”
Carla’s blood froze instantly.
She pushed the door open violently and saw Kate pressing a pillow hard over Greg’s face. Greg’s frail hands clawed weakly at the bedsheets, almost motionless.
“What are you doing?!” Carla rushed over and shoved Kate away.
The pillow dropped to the floor. Greg’s face was purple and blue; he was
unconscious.
“Help! Call an ambulance!”
Carla’s scream brought everyone running.
Jason was the first to rush in. His face changed drastically at the scene. “Grandpa!”
He scooped up Greg and rushed out. Passing Carla, his eyes were cold as
ice.
The hospital corridor lights were glaringly white.
The operating room lights stayed on all night. Carla sat on a bench, her hands trembling uncontrollably.
Kate curled up in Jason’s arms, quietly sobbing, occasionally shooting Carla venomous looks.
At dawn, the doctor finally stepped out. “Mr. Quinn, the lack of oxygen went on too long. There’s a high chance he may be in a vegetative state.”
Jason punched the wall, knuckles bleeding immediately.
In the VIP ward, Jason’s expression was dark as he stared at the two women. “What really happened?”
“It was her!” Kate immediately pointed at Carla, screaming, “She tried to kill Greg! When I came in, she was pressing a pillow over Greg’s face!”
Carla stared at her in disbelief. “Say that again?”
“It’s true no matter how many times I say it!” Kate cried bitterly. “Jason, I’m so scared. She almost killed me too.”
Jason’s gaze grew colder and colder until it was like an ice blade stabbing straight into Carla’s heart.
“Carla, Grandpa has always been good to you. How could you do something like this?”
