Chapter 5 

With Mandy right next to him, Samuel struggled to keep his emotions in check.

“How can this be? Amanda, is this another one of your tricks? You really go overboard just to marry me.

“I’m telling you now–I’m going on a trip with Mandy for a month, and the wedding is canceled. This is your consequence for these silly antics!”

I listened in silence as Samuel’s voice rose, though it carried the false bravado of outward strength masking inner fragility.

He began twisting the prayer beads in his hand once more, his body growing tense.

“Fine. You both go on your trip. I won’t bother you.”

With that, I spun around, took hold of Theo who had just shown up- and ushered him into the car.

In the rearview mirror, I saw Samuel frozen in place. His eyes, which seldom paid me any attention, were now locked onto me, so intently that he didn’t even notice Mandy calling his name.

“What’s the matter? Feeling bad for him? You can still change your mind. Go charm him a bit more, and maybe the wedding will still happen as scheduled.”

The man next to me sat comfortably, one leg crossed, giving me a sidelong glance.

“In recent years, I’ve come across rumors from afar saying that the Harlan girl is completely smitten with Samuel, unable to part from him. How could you stand to end the engagement with him?”

Theo’s voice dripped with sarcasm, yet if you listened carefully, there was a trace of jealousy. I looked into his eyes with a bit of resignation.

“It’s pointless. He doesn’t love me. I made an effort, and now I’ve come to terms with it. Theo, I have more self–respect than that.”

Upon hearing my determined words, a peculiar glint appeared in Theo’s eyes. He replied quietly.

“Are you really sure? You should know, if we marry, I won’t settle for being a mistress. I must be the lawful partner.‘

Hearing this, I couldn’t help but laugh.

same.

In those days, the three of us were inseparable. He was two years younger and always tagged along wherever I went. However, my focus was so fixed on pursuing Samuel that I overlooked the one trailing behind me.

When I finally mustered the courage to confess my feelings for Samuel publicly, he abruptly left the country and cut off all communication. Now, encountering this old friend again, a sense of familiarity washed over me, bringing an unexpected ease.

“Amanda, think it over. Are you sure you want to be with me?”

“Yes,” I answered, pulling up the back of my shirt to reveal, “Look, it’s your name.”

He was quiet for a while before abruptly asking, “Does it hurt?”

I stopped in my tracks, noticing his earnest look, and I matched his seriousness.

“It did hurt, but that’s behind me now.”

Samuel was history, whereas Theo represented what lay ahead.

As Theo and I rekindled our relationship, the wedding day came as planned. I had ordered a new wedding dress. While I was at the bridal shop, I was abruptly pulled into the fitting room.

“Amanda, are you seriously going to marry Theo? I’m warning you, don’t toy with my brother. He’s naive. He won’t be able to outsmart you.”

Samuel’s strong grip holding my chin became firmer, causing me discomfort.

“Samuel, what gives you the right to lecture me? Our engagement is already over. There’s no connection between a man getting married and a woman being wed!

“Moreover, you’ve ignored everything else these past years, focusing only on Mandy. How can you be sure Theo isn’t interested?”

Upon hearing this, Samuel’s eyes became clouded, though his tone grew slightly gentler.

‘Amanda, you don’t need to be envious of Mandy. There’s nothing between us. Plus, our families have arranged for us to get married. Quit trying to play hard to get. I’m not interested in wasting my time with you.”

I pulled away from his hold, faced him, and asked in astonishment.
