Chapter 6

Chapter 6

“How dare you go through my things?”

Celeste Monroe’s voice trembled with panic.

She couldn’t face Damien Sterling’s furious gaze, so she deflected.

“I’m eighteen now! You can’t just barge into my room and dig through my stuff.”

Damien’s patience snapped.

He grabbed the ashtray on the table and hurled it to the ground with a resounding crash.

“Is that really the point here?!” he thundered.

The ashtray hit the floor with a heavy thud, shattering the tense silence.

Celeste flinched.

“Celeste, you’ve got it all wrong,” Isolde Langley interjected, stepping in with an air of mock

concern.

Her voice was soft, almost soothing, but her eyes gleamed with triumph.

“Damien didn’t go into your room. It was me.”

She paused, a faint blush creeping across her cheeks as if embarrassed.

“I didn’t bring a change of clothes, and my dress from last night… well, Damien ruined it.‘

Her words hung in the air, suggestive and coy.

After a calculated pause, she continued, “I had no choice but to check your closet for

something to wear.

That’s when I accidentally came across this.”

She held up the cancer diagnosis report.

It was a lie, of course.

Celeste had locked that report away the very day she got it.

But Isolde’s story made it seem as though she had left it out intentionally–perhaps even to

gain their pity.

“Celeste, you’re so young. How could you have cancer?”

Molde placed a delicate hand on her chest, her expression a picture of sorrowful beauty.

“Tell me honestly–was this just a prank? Something you made up to scare us?”

Celeste’s eyes darted to Damien, who stood rigid, his jaw clenched.

To her dismay, the anger in his eyes far outweighed any trace of concern.

He didn’t believe she was sick.

Isolde must have poisoned his mind before she got home.

To him, this diagnosis was just another desperate ploy for his attention.

Maybe that was for the best, Celeste thought bitterly.

At least her secret was safe.

“It was a joke,” she said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper.

“I was messing around with a friend. I didn’t think it would end up-”

Before she could finish, Damien stood abruptly.

“We’re going to the hospital,” he said, his tone leaving no room for argument.

“Now.”

“Damien…”

Celeste tried to resist, her voice weak.

His cold glare silenced her.

She knew her uncle too well–there was no avoiding this.

By the time they arrived at the hospital, it was nearly midnight.

Under normal circumstances, most departments wouldn’t see patients at this hour.

But Damien had made a call to the hospital director, and no one dared refuse him.

A team of doctors was assembled to run a full battery of tests on Celeste.

The cancer screening alone would take at least two hours.

For Celeste, those two hours felt like an eternity.

As she waited, her thoughts spiraled.

If Damien found out she was dying, would he feel even a flicker of sadness?

r had she become such a burden in his eyes–twisted, jealous, unwanted–that he’d only

Lead relief to be rid of her?

When the doctor finally emerged with the results, Celeste felt her chest tighten.

“Mr. Sterling,” the doctor began, holding the report. “We’ve completed the tests. Miss Monroe is in perfect health. There’s no sign of cancer.”

Celeste blinked in shock.

She whipped her head around to Isolde, whose serene smile

gave her

away.

Celeste didn’t need to ask–this was her doing.

“Oh, thank goodness,” Isolde exhaled dramatically, clutching Damien’s arm.

“It was just a prank. I’m so relieved. Celeste is fine. Finally, we can all relax.”

Damien said nothing, his gaze locked on Celeste.

For the first time, he noticed how pale she looked, her face almost ghostly.

His rose, the girl he had raised and protected, seemed to be wilting before his eyes.
