“Hey, Maeve!” a familiar voice called out from behind.
Maeve took a deep breath, wiped away any hint of emotion, and turned to face Wren.
She raised an eyebrow. “Yes? What do you want?” she asked coolly.
Wren smirked. “Come on, Maeve, why are you being so cold? I thought maybe we could be friends–or even sisters–in–law. Gideon always said you were like a sister to him.”
Maeve barely reacted to Wren’s words. They might have stung before, but now she was over it. She gave Wren a faint, polite smile.
“How are the preparations for the mating ceremony?” she asked calmly.
Wren hesitated, clearly thrown off by Maeve’s lack of jealousy. “Everything’s going great. I can’t believe I’ll be the Luna of this pack in just a few days.”

Maeve shrugged. “Good for you. Congratulations,” she replied flatly, then started walking away.
Wren followed close behind. “Look at this beautiful band Gideon gave me. Pure gold with diamonds.”
Maeve ignored her, keeping her pace steady.
Wren continued, “I told him I wanted diamonds this time. I didn’t really like the rubies he gave me last year for my birthday”
Maeve stopped, surprise flashing across her face. “Wait, what?”
Wren smirked, pleased that she’d gotten a reaction. “I said, he got me rubies last year, but I told him I didn’t like them, so he got me diamonds this time.”
Maeve’s hands trembled as she ran them through her hair. “He gave you rubies? For your birthday?” she repeated.

Wren nodded smugly. “Yeah, why? What did he get you? Some cheap metal necklace?” she taunted.
Maeve’s heart twisted painfully. That was exactly what Gideon had bought for her.
But the real pain wasn’t the gift.
Maeve recalled Wren’s birthday all too well. Her mother had been gravely ill, but Gideon hadn’t been by her side. Instead, he’d been out celebrating Wren’s birthday.
Her mother needed a rare, costly medicine to survive. Maeve had called Gideon, desperate and in tears.
At first, he didn’t answer. When he finally did, he dismissed her. “There’s no money right now, Maeve, he’d said. “The Pack needs funds. You understand, right?”
She had forced herself to understand, blinded by love.

She sold her own belongings, her late father’s, and some of her mother’s things to gather the money. She spent sleepless nights brewing herbs to raise the funds.
And now, here was Wren, smiling arrogantly, bragging about rubies Gideon had bought during that same week.
Maeve inhaled deeply to steady herself- losing control wouldn’t help.
“I heard your mother was dying then, but you didn’t have the money for the medicine, Wren added.
Maeve clenched her jaw. “Shut up.“.
Wren laughed cruelly. “He said you cried like a child, begging for help. You were so pathetic, he couldn’t even stand to look at you. And all for what? A dying old woman.”
Maeve snapped. Her hand shot out and slapped Wren hard across the face.

Maeve steadied herself, expecting Wren to lash out–but instead, Wren simply smirked, then without warning, burst into loud, dramatic sobs that echoed through the room.
“Gideon!” she screamed as if in terror. “Help! She attacked me! She’s trying to kill me!”
Maeve stared at her, stunned. “Wha-”
Seconds later, Gideon stormed into the hall, worry etched across his face.
“What the hell are you doing?!” he demanded.
Wren ran to him, tears streaming down her cheeks. “She hit me, Gideon! I was only being friendly, but she got jealous and started hitting me!”
Gideon’s eyes blazed as he turned to Maeve. “Is that true?”
