When the clock struck seven, Gideon was nowhere to be seen. Maeve sat on the couch, fully dressed and ready, waiting for him to arrive.
She had been here before, countless times. She knew it always ended with tears and disappointment – but tonight, she had hoped it would be different. Maybe he’d finally keep his promise.
She had even worn the red dress he once said made her look “dangerous in the best way.” She’d curled her hair and applied some makeup, but it was all self–deception. She was not his. She had never been his.
Maeve lost track of time, sitting quietly until she eventually drifted off. A buzz from her phone startled her awake.
It was a message from Gideon.

“I can’t go there. Something urgent came up at the Pack. Let’s reschedule. I promise I’ll arrive on time.”
She glanced at the clock – 9 PM. And only now did he bother to text her. He had clearly forgotten and was just reaching out last minute to soothe his own conscience.
Reading it again, Maeve snorted softly, shaking her head. “Reschedule.” If only he knew there wouldn’t be a next time for him to reschedule.
Her phone buzzed again. This time it was Wren.
“Missing your date?” the message teased.
Attached were three photos. In the first, Gideon sat beside Wren on a bed, holding a cold compress to her forehead. In the second, he fed her soup with gentle care. The third showed him holding her hand, gazing at her like she was the only person in

“He’s just the best, isn’t he? I told him I had a headache, and he dropped everything for me. He said, ‘Wren, you’re more important than anything else right now! Isn’t that just the sweetest? I’m sure your spicy noodles can wait… forever.”
Maeve stared blankly at her screen. Her hands were steady. Her heart didn’t race. She felt nothing no anger, no jealousy – just relief.
Without hesitation, she deleted the pictures and messages. Wren thought she was hurting her, but Maeve knew she was actually doing her a favor.
Standing up, Maeve headed to her bedroom to change. The only annoyance about Gideon’s behavior was having to change out of the red dress–it had been such a pain to zip up.

into the mirror. Her eyes no longer looked shattered as they had that day – now, they appeared calm.
Her phone buzzed again, and she sighed in irritation. But then she saw it was Maxwell, and the frustration immediately faded. A smile spread across her face.
Maxwell had sent two pictures of dresses.
“Which one do you prefer?” he asked.
Maeve studied them both before replying.
“The first one” she answered.
“Okay, I’ll send it right away,” he replied.
Maeve raised an eyebrow.
“How do you know my size?” she typed with a teasing smile.
His reply came instantly.

Maeve blinked at the screen, blushing and giggling softly.
She was blushing over a text. From Maxwell.
How long had it been since someone made her feel truly wanted and noticed, like she mattered?
Alpha Maxwell was the one truly destined for her, handpicked by the moon goddess herself. Their paths had crossed during a leadership summit Maeve attended on Gideon’s behalf. That day, she had spoken with pride, believing she represented a mate who cherished her.
Maeve had told Maxwell that she already had a mate waiting at home, that she loved him deeply and she trusted he loved her so as well. She’d spoken with such certainty,

Maxwell asked her to think it over and
promised to wait for her answer.
Before the week was over, fortunately, Maeve uncovered Gideon’s lies in time. She gave Maxwell her answer.
Now, she was thankful she hadn’t dismissed him immediately, because in just a few messages and a single smirk emoji, Maxwell had warmed her heart far more than Gideon ever did.
