Chapter 6

Jackson blinked as he froze in place, reading

the message.

Trina: I don’t want to bring it to you. I am no

longer your maid. And if you regret marrying

me, then I too regret wasting my life with you.

Goodbye.

The words cut sharper than he expected. His

face tensed, jaw tightening as his fingers hovered over the screen. The audacity. Trina

was disobeying him now?

He immediately typed a response.

Jackson: Don’t be dramatic. I know you’re

doing this because you were mad about us

leaving you! Get your ass over here NOW.

No reply. He called her.

The line didn’t even ring–just went straight

to voicemail.

He tried again. And again. Blocked.

Jackson’s eyes narrowed as he began pacing

back and forth by the gate, ignoring the

curious glances of other passengers. The

more he thought about her defiance, the deeper the anger rooted inside him. Who the

hell did she think she was?

Donna noticed first.

“Jackson,” she said, adjusting her bag, “you

look like a bull about to charge. Where’s

Trina? Why isn’t she here yet?”

Before he could speak, Tania–scrolling on

her phone with an iced coffee in hand—

chimed in lazily, “Ugh, Mom’s really slow.

Sorry, Aunt Donna. She probably couldn’t

walk properly anymore. You know her back.”

Jackson turned and showed them the

message. “She’s not coming. This is what she

just sent me.”

Donna leaned in, squinting at the screen. A

second passed. And then she laughed.

“Oh, please,” she scoffed. “She’s being

dramatic because we didn’t include her in the

aurora borealis trip. Classic attention-

seeking. I told you she’d pull something like

this.”

But Jackson didn’t laugh. He looked at the

text again, fingers curling around his phone.

Something was wrong. He was sure.

“I don’t know, Donna. This feels different. I

think I need to go back. Check on her.”

Tania rolled her eyes. “What? Dad, no! You’re

going to let her ruin our trip now? Come on.”

Donna gently hooked her arm into his and

said sweetly, “Darling, remember how she did

this before? When she locked herself in the

room because we went to that gala without

her? She’ll calm down. She always does. Let’s

not give in to her guilt–tripping.”

She leaned closer, her voice playful. “Forget

the scarf. You’ll buy me another one, won’t

you?” Then, with a smirk, “Come on. Aren’t

you happy we’re all here with you now?”

He almost said no. Almost turned around and

ran straight back to the parking lot.

But then he sighed.

They were right, weren’t they?

Trina had always been emotional. Sensitive.

She’d cool off and call him like she always

did. Apologize. Act as though nothing

happened.

So he nodded, slowly, and boarded the plane

with them.

Finland was cold, glittering, and breathtaking.

Snow dusted the cobbled streets like

powdered sugar, and the northern lights

danced above the hotel rooftops. Donna was

ecstatic–posing for selfies in front of

reindeer, squealing at every boutique. She

clung to Jackson’s arm, kissed his cheek in

public, whispered about how lucky they were

to finally be “together.”

But Jackson? He couldn’t focus.

Everything reminded him of Trina. Her

laughter when she used to talk about

wanting to see the aurora. How she always

talked about stars and skies like they were

poetry. How she had once looked at him like

he was her whole sky.

Now she was gone. He hadn’t gotten any

more texts. No missed calls. Nothing.

She was really gone.

While Donna and Tania were trying on coats,

Jackson drifted to a quiet shop across the

plaza. It was there he saw the necklace.

Simple. Elegant. Silver with a charm shaped

like the northern star.

Trina would’ve loved it.

“I’ll take it,” he said.

He didn’t realize Donna had followed him

until she spoke up behind him.

“Oh! You bought something?” She beamed.

“Let me see!”

He handed the box to the cashier, who

placed the necklace into a velvet pouch.

“That one’s for Trina,” he said absently.

Donna’s smile dropped.

“What do you mean Trina?”

Jackson didn’t respond. He pulled out his

wallet and paid.

“Wait,” she said, her voice sharper now. “Why

would you get her something so expensive?

What about me?”

Jackson gave her a tired glance. “This is how

I make up for leaving her. Get another one if

you want something.”

And with that, he turned and walked out of

the shop.

That evening, they waited on the balcony of

the glass–roofed hotel. Everyone was

bundled up, hot cocoa in hand, watching the

sky.

Jackson stepped out of the shower, opened

the drawer, and reached for the pouch. He

was so excited about taking a photo of the

necklace to send it to Trina, thinking it might

calm her.

But it was gone. His brows furrowed. He

turned the suite upside down. Then he

stepped out onto the balcony.

Donna was there, standing under the sky,

wearing it.

The necklace glinted beneath the aurora’s

glow, nestled against her throat like it

belonged there.

Rage bubbled in Jackson’s chest.

He stormed toward her. “Didn’t I say that was

for Trina?”

Donna turned, her eyes wide with fake

surprise. “I’m just wearing it before her.”

He stepped closer. “Donna. I told you. That

necklace wasn’t for you.”

“Why not?” she snapped. “I’m the one your

want. I’m the one who you love and not here.

She is just a placeholder, right? So, I get the

good things first. That’s how it works now,

doesn’t it?”

“No,” Jackson growled. “I said it was for her.

Remove it.”

Donna lifted. her chin. “I don’t want to.”

The silence was sudden. And then, Jackson’s

hand flew.

The slap echoed across the balcony, sharp

and shocking. Donna staggered back, her

hand to her cheek, gasping.
