Chapter 8

The moment I stepped off the plane, the cold

kissed my cheeks like an old friend I’d missed

all my life. The silence, the snow, the soft

beauty of it all–it was far too different from

the noisy chaos I left behind. But nothing hit

me harder than the sight of my father

standing by the arrival gate, his eyes

glistening with emotion, arms slightly open

like he wasn’t sure if I’d want the embrace.

I dropped my suitcase and walked into his

arms without hesitation.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered as my arms tightened

around him. “I should’ve never left. I chose

love over you, over everything, and it

destroyed me.”

He hugged me tighter, his voice cracking. “It

doesn’t matter now, Trina. What matters is-

you’re home.”

Home. Yes, I am. Finally.

We sat in the backseat of his car as the snow

fell around us like feathers. My father reached

for my hand and smiled. “I’ve been waiting for

this moment. You’re the rightful owner of the

company, Trina. I wanted to give it to you long

ago–but now, it’s truly yours.”

I blinked. “Wait… what do you mean?”

He sighed deeply, his hand trembling slightly as he pulled a bottle of pills from his coat pocket. “Because I’m sick. Stage three pancreatic cancer. I’ve kept it from everyone, especially from the board members because they would challenge my position, but now

that you’re here, there is nothing to hide

now…”

“What?” My voice came out small, strangled.

“Why not tell me? Why only now?”

“I didn’t want you to worry. Not after

everything you went through. You’ve suffered

enough. And I wasn’t sure if you would still

want to talk to me considering I told you a lot

of hurtful things.”

Tears slid down my cheeks before I could

stop them. “Stil, Dad. And it was never your

fault! It is my fault for disobeying you.” I whispered. “You should’ve told me before. I—I

would’ve come back sooner.”

“I know,” he said softly, brushing a tear from

my cheek like he used to when I was a little

girl. “But I wanted to wait until you were ready

to see me. And now, you are. Look at you. You

came back on your own terms. Stronger.”

“I’ll take care of everything,” I said with

determination in my voice. “The company.

You. Everything. You don’t have to do this

alone anymore.”

He nodded and smiled weakly. “Thank you.

But before that… I want you to live a little. Breathe. See what you’ve been missing.”

And so, I did.

34070

For the first time in years, I allowed myself to

slow down. I explored the streets of Helsinki,

tasted strange candies in the markets, drank

hot chocolate while watching the snow fall

silently over rooftops. I even visited Lapland

and took a husky sled ride, laughing like I

hadn’t in years.

And then one evening, while walking along a quiet street adorned with fairy lights, I passed

a quaint wedding boutique.

Something inside me paused.

4070

I walked in. The clerk greeted me with a warm

smile. “Looking for a dress?”

“No,” I said instinctively. “Just looking.”

But my feet carried me deeper into the store

until I found myself running my hands along a

simple ivory gown–satin, sleeveless, and

timeless.

Would I have worn this had I known the truth

about Jackson? Probably not.

But this time–this wasn’t about him.

This was for me.

I tried it on. The woman zipped it up gently,

gasping. “It looks like it was made for you.”

I stared at the mirror and didn’t recognize the

woman in front of me. Her eyes were

stronger. Her back straighter. She looked like

a bride–but not a bride waiting for someone.

A bride who chose herself.

But once upon a time, I had worn a wedding

dress with a heart full of hope and a man

beside me I thought would never leave. I still

remember the way Jackson looked at me

that day, as if I were the center of his

universe. He whispered promises that

echoed like poetry-“I’ll protect you. I’ll build

a life for you. You’ll never feel alone again.”

I believed him. God, I believed every word. I

thought I had stepped into a fairytale. We

laughed, danced, kissed under fairy lights like

the world belonged to us.

But the fairytale slowly bled into a nightmare.

The promises faded. His love became

conditional, cruel. I became a servant in my

own home, unloved, unseen.

Now, as I stared at my reflection, I saw a woman no longer defined by broken vows.

This wedding dress wasn’t for anyone else.

This one… was for me.

I stepped outside with the dress still on,

laughing as the snow fell gently over my veil.

People stared. A few even clapped. One man

shouted, “Congratulations!”

And in that moment, I didn’t correct them. I

was marrying myself to freedom.

Later, I found a charming old photography

studio and decided to document the day. “I

want a wedding shoot,” I said to the man

behind the camera.

“Just you?” he asked.

I smiled. “Yes. Just me.”

We had just begun the shoot when the

photographer looked up from his camera.

“You’re not going to believe this,” he said. “I

actually have another solo wedding shoot

scheduled right now. Would you mind

sharing the frame for a few shots? It could be

fun.”

I tilted my head. “A joint solo wedding

shoot?”

He laughed. “Happens more often than you

think.”

I agreed, slightly amused, smoothing down

the fabric of the gown as I waited. The door

behind me opened, and I turned casually.

And then I froze.

The man who walked in was wearing a navy

blue suit, tailored perfectly, the kind you wear

when you know your worth. He looked up,

and his brown eyes widened in surprise.

My heart stopped.

“Mateo?”

My childhood friend–and love!

He blinked. “Trina?”
