Chapter 10

It had been days since Jackson returned to

the house, and it was still empty.

No sound of footsteps.

No scent of fresh–baked bread.

No gentle humming from the kitchen.

Just silence.

Trina was gone.

At first, Jackson told himself it was temporary

—that she was simply upset. That she would

return like she always did, maybe after a few

dramatic days away. But days turned to a

week, and her absence carved a hollow out

of him.

He started calling her old friends. Her old

office. Even her father’s associates. No one

knew anything, or at least, they claimed they

didn’t.

In desperation, he visited the police station

and tried to file a missing person report.

The officer across the desk glanced at the

divorce papers Jackson had brought for

context. “Sir… I’m sorry. But you’re no longer

legally connected. She has the right to

disappear if she wants. This isn’t a missing

person’s case. It’s someone walking away from a marriage.”

“But she’s my wife-” Jackson snapped.

“She’s your ex–wife,” the officer corrected

gently. “And it’s final.”

Jackson walked out of the precinct with a

hollow in his chest and a rage building in his

throat.

Back home, Donna was lounging on the sofa

with a glass of wine. She glanced at him and

raised an eyebrow.

“Well?” she asked. “Any sign of our little

runaway?”

His voice cracked, frustration bubbling

beneath every word. “I should’ve listened to

my gut when she sent that message. I felt it—

something wasn’t right. But no, I let you and

Tania talk me into staying. I told myself she’d

calm down like always… but this time, she

didn’t.” He ran a hand through his hair,

pacing. “I let her walk out thinking I didn’t

care. Thinking I chose a trip over her. What

kind of man does that? What kind of

husband?”

He turned away, guilt pressing heavy on his

chest. “She was begging me in her own way.

And I ignored her. I brushed her off like she

didn’t matter.” He gritted his teeth. “And now…

maybe it’s too late to make it right.”

Donna scoffed. “Isn’t this what we wanted?

Jackson turned sharply toward her. “No. This

isn’t what I wanted. She can’t just divorce me.

She’s mine.”

Tania, who had just come down the stairs,

folded her arms. “But she did, Dad. Maybe it’s

time we just… forget about her.”

“She’s right,” Donna chimed in. “And besides,

maybe she left because she was seeing

someone else.”

Jackson’s eyes darkened. “That’s impossible.

Trina wouldn’t-”

“Oh, really?“. Donna stood and pulled out her

phone. “I wasn’t going to show you this

because I knew it would hurt, but maybe it’s

time you see the truth.”

She pulled up a set of photos–images that

showed Trina laughing with a man in a

bakery. Another where the man handed her

something over the counter. One where their

heads were close, as if talking intimately.

“These are fake,” Jackson muttered.

“They’re not,” Donna said smoothly. “I had

seen them weeks ago. I didn’t want to break

your heart, Jack. But she was clearly seeing

someone even before she left. It’s why she

divorced you. She had someone else

waiting.”

He stared at the images, numb. The images

stung more than he expected. And even

though something in his gut told him they

didn’t add up, the pain in his chest

overwhelmed reason.

He crushed the phone in his hand and threw

it onto the couch. “Then I should’ve killed that

guy… I should’ve never let this happen. I

should’ve stopped it–this is all your fault!” he

roared, turning to Donna.

Donna flinched, shocked. “My fault?”

Tania stepped forward, siding with her aunt.

“Why are you blaming Aunt Donna when

Mom’s the one who cheated?”

“No,” Jackson whispered. “No, that’s not

true…”

He stumbled away from them and slammed

the bedroom door shut behind him.

The scent of Trina still lingered faintly in the

room. He dropped to the edge of the bed, his

hands shaking.

And then he remembered her clearly…

She was laughing as she chased flour across

the kitchen counter, scolding him for tossing

dough too early.

“Jackson! That was supposed to chill first!”

“Rules are meant to be broken,” he’d grinned,

flinging a bit of flour her way.

She squealed and chased him through the

kitchen, both of them laughing like children.

Later, they collapsed on the floor together,

breathless, cheeks smudged white.

Another memory. Their first anniversary.

She had surprised him with his favorite dish,

the entire room lit with candles. Soft music

floor.

And another–The night she stayed up all

night when he was sick, holding a cool cloth to his forehead and humming softly. She had kissed his knuckles like he was fragile. Like

he was worth it.

And another–when she had found out she

was pregnant. She cried in his arms,

trembling with joy and fear all at once, and he

She had started knitting tiny socks at night,

humming lullabies as if their child could

That’s our baby saying hi.”

And he had smiled, believing their life was

finally perfect. But then… the loss came like a

storm. She wept silently, and he held her, but

even then, he’d already started drifting.

Now those memories crashed into him like

waves, relentless and cold.

He dropped his head into his hands, breath

ragged.

A tear slipped down his cheek.

“Please, Trina… come back to me.”
