Chapter 6

Wendel froze, as if he couldn’t believe what he had just heard.

Jerry’s face turned pale, and his voice shook with increasing tremor. “The rescue teams are already searching the sea, but-”

Before he could finish, Wendel’s eyes rolled back, and he collapsed on the

spot.

From the moment he woke up, Wendel refused to leave the coastline. He stood there day and night, watching the rescue teams comb the ocean.

The search lasted for three whole days, but there was no result.

Wendel’s face was deathly pale. For the past three days, he had neither eaten nor drunk, and his body had reached the brink of exhaustion.

In truth, the golden 48–hour window for rescue had long passed. Everyone

knew what that meant.

Even the search team, hardened professionals, couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy as they looked at him.

“I heard the one missing is his sister–in–law,” one whispered, “and she was pregnant, too. But from the way he’s acting, you’d think it was his wife who went missing.”

One of the rescuers stepped forward and approached Wendel cautiously.

“Mr. Fleming, we’ve done everything we can, but there’s no sign of your

sister–in–law.”

“The survival rate for an ocean crash like this is close to zero. Continuing the search is… meaningless. We’re so sorry for your loss, but-”

Before the man could finish, Wendel lunged forward and grabbed him by the collar, like a madman.

“Shut up! Who the hell do you think you are?! My wife hasn’t been found–how can you say it’s meaningless?!”

“Sorry for my loss? What Joss?! How dare you curse her like that?! I’ll kill you–l swear I’ll kill you!”

Everyone was shocked by Wendel’s sudden outburst. They didn’t even notice that he had referred his sister–in–law as his wife.

Several people rushed forward to restrain him.

The people around him were horrified, rushing to support him.

But Wendel swatted their hands away, stumbling towards the sea while muttering to himself.

“Aileen, don’t be scared, I’m coming to be with you…”

As expected, Wendel was pulled back to safety.

When he woke up in the hospital, the first thing he saw was Ivy, sobbing by his bedside.

But Wendel’s eyes were hollow–completely lifeless, as though his soul had been ripped from his body.

“Why did you save me…” he murmured. “Why couldn’t you just let me die…? I’m the one who should’ve died…”

On hearing his words, Ivy’s head snapped up. She cried harder, pounding his

chest with her fists.

“How could you say that? You promised to stay with me for the time I have left. If you die, what am I supposed to do?!”

“I’m telling you, Wendel Fleming–if you die, I won’t live either!”

At last, Wendel’s eyes regained some focus. He turned slowly toward Ivy, still sobbing beside him.

He knew, Ivy loved him. During the four years he loved Aileen in college, Ivy had loved him just as much.

Ivy had been an overseas exchange student in college, but when she fell in love with Wendel, she chose to stay in New Jersey after the exchange program ended.

Even though Wendel never really paid attention to her, and never let Aileen know about her existence, her love for him was persistent and obsessive. Even after college graduation, Ivy managed to find an opportunity to enter Fleming’s corporation as a translator.
