When David saw me, a flash of amazement crossed his eyes. 

“Looks like you’ve been doing well this past month,” he said with a bitter smile. “Are you so happy to be rid of me?” 

Emily stood up, shielding David behind her like a mother protecting her cub. “Nora, don’t forget you’re here to divorce 

Dave. Why are you all dolled up? Having second thoughts and trying to steal my man?” 

I let out a derisive laugh, giving David a once–over. 

He looked like he was nursing a hangover. His hair was messy, his beard unshaven, giving off an air of dishevelment and decay. 

And if I wasn’t mistaken, his stomach had a slight bulge, like the beginnings of a beer belly. 

“Looks like you’ve had a rough month,” I said to David, my tone almost certain. 

David gave a bitter smile. “How could I be okay without you?”

David followed silently behind me. 

Signing, receiving the certificate – it all happened in quick succession. 

When I got the divorce decree, I looked at the little red book and felt a surge of freedom. 

David broke his silence to ask, “Nora, my mother wants me to marry Emily, to take responsibility for the child she’s carrying. But I don’t want to. I only want you.” 

“Just say the word that you don’t want me to marry Emily, and I’ll leave with you right now.” 

I looked at him, smiling brightly, “I wish you both a hundred years of happiness together.”
