Grayson mediately dropped hvy’s hand and rushed to explain: “Don’t misunderstand–it’s really over between us.” She was just making a scene, pushing me to take her out one last time. She said she’d keep pestering me if I didn’t.”

But Grayson chung to me, refusing to let me go: “Celeste, yell at me, curse me out–whatever you want. Just please give me a chance to make this right.” 

“I really know I screwed up. It won’t happen again.” 

“Even death row inmates get advance notice–don’t just cut me off like this. I can’t handle it.” 

I shook my head and refused to give him another chance. 

This wasn’t his first betrayal or his first broken promise. I’d never trust him again. 

After I left, Grayson shoved Ivy hard: “This is all your fault! Now she’ll never believe me again.” 

A flash of smugness crossed Ivy’s eyes as she hugged him, trying to comfort him: “It’s okay. She’s gone, but you still have me.” 

“Gray, I’ll always be by your side, no matter what.” 

Grayson suddenly froze. 

He remembered when we’d first gotten together, I’d said almost the exact same words to him. 

He’d come from a messed–up family and had been traumatized since childhood. 

Everyone else avoided him like the plague, too scared to get close. 

Only I had stood up for him, even getting into physical fights with his toxic relatives. 

When he came to bail me out of jail and saw me covered in bruises, his eyes had gone completely red. 

That was when we’d confirmed our feelings for each other and decided to get married. 

Inder the stars, I’d sworn to treat him well for life, to never leave him and always protect him, to give him a good life. 

He’d made the same passionate promises to me. 

But in the end, things change. 

Even people who love each other can lose their way. 

Remembering those sweet times and watching me walk away, he finally broke down crying. 

Those beautiful days were gone forever. 

Reluctantly, he took Ivy’s hand. 

He hated being alone, was terrified of loneliness.

Now that I’d left him, he was panicking. Ivy was the only lifeline he had left–he couldn’t let go of her too. 

After that, Grayson rarely came to see me. 

His company was in major crisis mode, and he was too busy dealing with disasters to keep bothering me. 

Ivy successfully climbed to the top, becoming a real executive. 

Like most small minded people who suddenly gain power, she immediately started seeking praise and promoting ass–kissers. 

The result? Anyone with real talent either got pushed out or quit in frustration. 

Even as the company was circling the drain, she proposed across–the–board salary cuts, claiming everyone was overpaid and the company couldn’t afford them. Take it or leave. 

That drove away even more people. 

Gradually, all the experienced hands who could actually handle problems got squeezed out. 

What remained were either incompetent yes–men or brand–new hires. 

It didn’t take long before the empire I’d worked so hard to build for Grayson came crashing down. 

Grayson declared bankruptcy and shut down the company. 

Meanwhile, I kept climbing the ladder at my new job. 

One day, while I was in a meeting, I overheard some people badmouthing me. 

The voices were familiar–Ivy’s former lackeys who’d publicly mocked me before. 

Now one of them was ranting angrily: “That bitch Celeste Warner! We just told a few home truths and she holds a grudge, getting HR to blacklist all of

‘We didn’t even make it through the first round. I must’ve been blind to side with that empty–headed Ivy back then.”
