When she heard the neighbors rallied behind her, Olivia’s panicked expression vanished. She straightened up and turned back to my father, her fear replaced with cold calculation. 

She choked back a sob and declared, “Thomas, if you don’t stand up for me, then let’s get a divorce. However, let me make one thing clear, I will report this to the police. Megan caused my miscarriage and you hit me in front of everyone. I demand justice!” 

She purposedly emphasized the word police, it was clear that she was using it as a threat. If my father didn’t comply, she’d make sure he ended up in jail for assault. 

Finn, seeing my father hesitate, assumed he was afraid and eagerly added fuel to the fire. 

“Uncle Thomas, your family’s actions have been disgraceful! Negan had caused Auntie Olivia’s miscarriage and instead of making amends, you hit her when she was at her weakest! If you don’t offer proper compensation, this won’t end well!” 

“Well, how about this?” he said. “As Megan’s fiancé. I’ll be the voice of reason. First, you and Auntie Olivia get a divorce. As an apology, half of the marital assets go to her.” 

“Second, since Megan is responsible for Auntie Olivia’s miscarriage, she must hand over her year–end bonus and transfer the house to Auntie Olivia’s name.” 

“Third, you must swear in front of everyone and sign a legal agreement promising never to reclaim the assets given to Auntie Olivia.” 

“Fourth, I refuse to associate with your family any longer. I’m breaking off my engagement with Megan. I want my betrothal gifts returned, but don’t expect to get back her dowry from me.” 

“This last part is just my personal decision and it has nothing to do with Auntie Olivia.” 

After finishing his Finn arrogantly tilted his chin. He was waiting for my father to bow his head in submission, but the next second, I burst into laughter.

My laughter infuriated Finn. He spun toward me and snarled, “Megan, how dare you laugh….‘ However, my father’s fist was faster than his curses and before he could finish his sentence, my father’s fist had connected with his face. 

A loud thud echoed in the courtyard. 

Finn, who had always prided himself on his good looks, clutched his swollen cheek in shock and yelled, “Uncle Thomas! I’m Megan’s fiancé! How could you hit me?” 

My father scoffed. “Fiancé? Didn’t you just say you were breaking off the engagement? Do you think I’m deaf?” Finn furrowed his brows. It seemed he did not want to argue with an unreasonable man. 

“Yes, I’m withdrawing my engagement with Megan. However, I’m suggesting that solution with sincere intention. You can ask the neighbor if you don’t believe me.” 

Olivia added her own threat, “Thomas, it seems you don’t want to settle this privately. Okay! Let’s call the police and go to the public court to settle this matter. At that time, the neighbor present will be my witnesses.”

Olivia took out her cell phone to call the police and also used her words to get the surrounding neighbor’s sympathy. However, she didn’t expect that the neighbors who were still somewhat sympathetic to her, suddenly frowned and took a few steps back away from her. 

Beth, the next–door neighbor, shook her head and said, “Olivia, it’s not a good thing to go to the police station on 

New Year’s Day. Even though you did not celebrate the New Year, we still do. I can’t help you to act as your witness.” 

Fred also agreed with her. “Yes, my daughter and son–in–law are finally coming back. I don’t have time to go to the police station as a witness. I don’t want to get involved in this matter. Find someone else, I won’t go!”

With Beth and Fred’s statement, the others also refused to go and did not want to be witnesses on New Year’s
