Chapter 5

“You’re awake?” Brandon’s voice came from beside her.

Evelyn slowly turned her head and saw him sitting at the edge of the bed, brows furrowed. There was a flicker of concern in his eyes–but it was quickly swallowed by anger.

“Do you even realize you fractured a bone?” His voice was low, tight. “The doctor said if the impact had been just a little off, you’d be dead.”

Evelyn’s throat burned. She parted her lips and rasped, “It was Vanessa Hale. She pushed me.”

Brandon’s expression darkened instantly. “Even now, you’re still accusing others?”

“I’m not lying!” Evelyn struggled to sit up. “Your mother shoved me into traffic!”

“Enough!” Brandon shot to his feet, fury blazing in his eyes. “My mom just came to, and she said you pushed her! Vanessa saw it too–she saw you ram the wheelchair!”

Evelyn stared at him, her voice hoarse but steady. “Check the security cameras.”

“What cameras?!” Brandon snatched her wrist, barely restraining his temper. “You think I don’t know my own mother? And Vanessa? She’s the gentlest person I’ve ever known–why the hell would she hurt you?”

Evelyn suddenly let out a bitter laugh, her eyes stinging red.

He believed everyone but her.

She reached for the call button and pressed it with steady fingers.

When the nurse came in, Evelyn spoke calmly. “Call the police.”

Brandon’s face turned pale. “Are you out of your mind?”

The officers arrived not long after. Just as they began to ask questions, Brandon cut in coldly. “She has mental health issues. Depression. She’s prone to delusions.”

The cops glanced at Evelyn with doubt in their eyes.

“I want the traffic camera footage pulled,” she said evenly.

Brandon leaned toward the officers, voice low and sickeningly polite. “Sorry. She’s not well lately. I’ll

arrange for her to receive psychiatric care.”

The officers hesitated, but eventually just jotted down a basic report and left.

As soon as the door shut, Brandon grabbed her shoulders, his voice icy. “You really want to blow this up, don’t you?”

Evelyn met his gaze. “All I want is the truth.”

“The truth?” Brandon laughed darkly. “You’ve been faking it since yesterday just to frame my mom and pin everything on Vanessa. Evelyn, you’re unbelievable.”

She didn’t respond–just looked at him in silence.

Something about her gaze made Brandon’s chest twist, but before he could speak, the door flung open.

Vanessa stepped inside, eyes rimmed red. “Brandon… your mom’s awake. She says Evelyn pushed her.”

His expression turned glacial.

“Of course,” he muttered. Then he turned to the guard at the door. “Take her to the isolation chamber.”

Evelyn was pinned down onto the bed, her limbs strapped tightly with restraints.

Brandon stood at the doorway, his brows furrowed–hesitation flashing across his face before vanishing

into cold resolve.

Vanessa stepped closer and whispered gently, “Your mom said she’s unstable right now. If we don’t scare her a little… who knows what she’ll do next.”

Brandon shut his eyes, jaw tightening. “Begin.”

The moment the current hit, pain erupted through Evelyn’s body like liquid fire, ripping through every

nerve.

She bit down hard on her lip slipping, the sharp tang of blood mixing with the smell of burnt skin.

“Did you push her?” the doctor asked.

She said nothing.

Another surge of electricity hit. Her body jerked violently, a broken whimper escaping her throat.

Brandon stood on the sidelines, fingers trembling slightly. Suddenly, he shouted, “That’s enough!”

But Vanessa caught his arm, whispering, “Brandon, your mom said unless she suffers a little, she’ll never tell the truth.”

His fists clenched.

He turned away.

On the third jolt, Evelyn finally broke.

Her voice cracked, raw and broken, as she screamed, “Fine! It was me! I pushed her!”

Brandon spun around. A flicker of anguish crossed his face–but it was gone in an instant.

“See? That wasn’t so hard,” he said, walking over. He reached out like she was still his–still his to soothe,

to control.

She turned her face away.

His hand froze midair, then dropped.

“Keep her here for two more days,” he said flatly. “Let her sit with it.”

And with that, he left.

Vanessa lingered behind, her expression calm. Then she gave the doctor a small nod.
