Sunlight streamed through the airplane window, scattering flecks of gold across the cabin floor. When Eleanor Knight opened her eyes, she found herself staring into a pair of dark, fathomless ones.

“Only two hours?” She frowned at her phone.

Lucas Chase immediately handed her a glass of water, his fingers trembling slightly. “Did you have a nightmare?”

As the warm water soothed her throat, she gazed out the window. The plane soared over the city, its countless lights twinkling like stars. When she turned back, she caught the faint redness at the corners of his eyes—like a forsaken, oversized puppy.

“Babe…” His voice was hoarse. “I’ve already come clean. Why are you still ignoring me?”

Only then did Eleanor realize she had been giving him the cold shoulder for half a day. At first, she’d been too stunned to speak. Then… then she’d actually fallen asleep.

Was she angry? Absolutely.

Not because he’d pretended to be poor—after all, she’d been the one with the ridiculous idea of keeping him in the first place. No, she was furious because even his proposal had been part of the act!

“You lied to me for so long,” she suddenly reached out and covered his face with her hand. “How do I know there aren’t more secrets?”

Lucas immediately raised his hand in a vow. “If I ever hide anything from you again—”

“Shut up!” She clapped her other hand over his mouth. “What kind of reckless oath is this to make on a plane?” His rapid breath against her fingertips sent a scorching heat straight to her ears.

“Question and answer,” she said, forcing composure. “When you said your family was ‘moderately well-off,’ how modest are we talking?”

“Well…” His gaze flickered. “The kind of modest that can buy you jewelry.”

Eleanor instantly recalled that embarrassingly meager check. A few million? That probably couldn’t even buy one of his watches!

“Who cares about your jewelry?” The tips of her ears burned. “You wouldn’t even take my money back then…”

“I didn’t want you to think I was after your wealth.” He leaned in abruptly, his warm breath grazing her neck. “I only wanted you.”
