Chapter 1 

Dashiell Davis and I decided to elope. 

But the night before we were supposed to leave, 

I found a marriage certificate in his coat pocket- 

and it wasn’t with me. 

Seven years of love, and it was all just a lie. 

I opened his messages with his best friend. 

“What if Seraphina Cooper finds out?” 

“Relax. She won’t.” 

“We agreed to elope–no license, no paperwork.” 

“Besides, after seven years, she won’t walk away from me.” 

I wiped my tears and walked out of the apartment.

Dashiell walked out of the bathroom. 

I was packing my suitcase. 

“Babe, something came up at work,” he said. 

“You finish packing and head straight to the airport.” 

“I’ll meet you there after the meeting.” 

He grabbed his jacket and headed for the door. 

I didn’t even look up. 

I just wiped a tear and forced a smile. 

“Okay. Take care of it.” 

The second he left, I started pulling his clothes out of the suitcase- 

one by one, onto the floor. 

Then I packed my own.

Thirty minutes earlier, Dashiell had gone in to take a shower. 

I’d reached into the inner pocket of his suit jacket. 

That’s when I found the marriage certificate. 

But the bride wasn’t me. 

Just a few days ago, he’d proposed. 

I was over the moon. 

I thought after seven long years, we were finally getting our happy ending. 

Turns out, it was just the end. 

He told me he didn’t want a big wedding. 

Said he didn’t want a legal ceremony either. 

“Weddings are a hassle.” 

“Too many people to deal with. Total nightmare.” 

That’s what he said, word for word. 

So we agreed to elope. 

To travel the country together, 

see the world, 

let the mountains and rivers witness our love. 

No big party, no paperwork–what did it matter? 

We had seven years of history. 

I believed in us. 

I believed he was ready to grow old with me. 

But reality hit like a slap to the face. 

I opened his laptop, 

found a locked cloud folder on his desktop. 

I tried that girl’s birthday as the password.
