Two days before I was set to leave for the UK, I was packing when one of the house staff told me Dashiell was
kneeling outside our gate.
1 wasn’t going to see him, but they said he’d been out there for hours.
Looked like he wasn’t planning to leave until I came out.
I sighed and went to see him.
He looked like a wreck.
Hair a mess, unshaven, wearing a dusty white shirt, kneeling in front of the gate.
When he saw me, his whole face lit up like I was the sun coming out.
He jumped up, eyes wide with hope.
“Baby, I got the divorce. We can start over!”
I stared at the divorce papers in his hand, stunned.
How the hell did he get Anna to agree?
“Dashiell, there’s no going back. Just leave,” I said quietly.
But he grabbed the hem of my dress, refusing to let go.
“Sera, I swear I’ve changed! Please, just one more chance!”
“What stray mutt is howling at the Cooper front gate?” my brother suddenly yelled.
He stormed out barefoot and punched Dashiell square in the jaw.
He’d been playing chess with Dad and heard the commotion.
Because of Anna’s little stunt online, our company stock took a serious hit.
It bounced back, but as the Cooper family’s heiress and soon–to–be CEO, this scandal shook investor confidence in

My brother had wanted to beat the crap out of Dashiell for weeks–but I’d talked him down.
Now Dashiell walked right into the lion’s den.
My brother didn’t hold back.
Every punch landed hard–he made sure of it.

Dashiell didn’t even fight back.
He just kept calling my name like a broken record.
“Sera!”
“Sera, please. I know I screwed up. Give me one last chance!”
“You always forgave me before–can’t you do it one more time?”
“You said I was the love of your life! Were you lying?”
“Don’t do this to me. Without you, I don’t know how to live!”
He was sobbing, eyes red, voice raw from shouting.
“I told you to shut up!” my brother snarled.
He beat Dashiell so badly his face was swollen and bloody, one of his teeth was knocked loose.
I couldn’t watch anymore.
“Enough,” I said, grabbing my brother’s arm.
“You’ll just dirty your hands.”
He scoffed and stopped, then tried to pull me back inside.
“Let’s go. He’s trash.”
“I’ll talk to him for a minute. You go ahead,” I said.
“Sera, after everything he’s done-”
“I promise. This is the last time.”
He sighed. “Fine. Just don’t soften up.”
“I won’t.”
Once my brother left, I walked over to Dashiell.
He still clutched my dress, tears sliding down his face.
“Sera, don’t go. Please,” he begged.
“I’ve changed. I swear I’ll treat you right this time.”
His eyes begged for forgiveness, but my heart was ice.
Every time I thought about him marrying Anna behind my back, it felt like a nail driven into my chest.

“You didn’t just make a mistake, Dashiell.”
“You never put me first.”
“If you really cared, you wouldn’t have said those things to your brother.“”
“You wouldn’t have believed I’d never leave you,”
“I wasted seven years on you.”
“But it’s over now.”
“I don’t ever want to see you again. You disgust me.”
He let go of my dress and looked up, broken.
“Please, Seraphina.”
“We’ve been through so much. I still have all our pictures–look.”
He tried to show me the photos on his phone.
I felt sick.
I snatched the phone and smashed it to the ground.
It shattered on impact.
“I said we’re done.”
“The moment I saw your marriage license with her, it was over.”
I turned around and walked back into the house.
I don’t even know when he left.
But I stuck to my plan and left for the airport.
An hour before my flight, a call came in from an unknown number.
“Hello?” I answered.
“Baby, it’s me.”
Dashiell.
I moved to hang up.
“Wait–just hear me out. I’m sorry for everything.”
“Where are you? Can we talk in person?”

“I’m at the airport.”
“Going on vacation?”
“No. Studying abroad.”
“Taking over my dad’s company.”
“I’m not coming back anytime soon.”
“When did you decide this?”
“The night I saw your marriage certificate.”
“Sera, don’t do this.”
“We were together for seven years.”
“Exactly.”
“And the way I treated you during those seven years is exactly why you thought you could walk all over me.”
“Tell me something, Dashiell–do you love me?”
“Of course I do!”
“Then why did you marry her behind my back?”
“You told me you didn’t want to get married, didn’t want a license–but with her, you had no problem doing either.”
He went silent.
Then quietly, “We can get married. We can have a wedding. I mean it.”
I actually laughed.
“Don’t you think it’s a little late for that?”
I hung up and boarded the plane.
Three months later, I officially took over my father’s multinational company.
Seven years with Dashiell hadn’t dulled my business instincts.
The company thrived under my leadership.
Later, my brother called from back home with an update on Anna and Dashiell.
They divorced.
Anna terminated the pregnancy.

Eventually, she took her own life.
Not long after, Dashiell got into a car accident.
He’s in a coma now–a vegetable.
