Chapter 4 

I made a full dinner spread to say goodbye to the guys from base. 

Mostly Zachary’s crew–his squad commanders and a few officers. 

As I carried out the last dish, I heard the guys hollering 

“Colonel, how about a toast with Dr. Sophie?” 

“Yeah, come on, make it official!” 

Sophie was sitting right next to Zachary, blushing like a bride. 

“Cut it out, guys,” someone chuckled. 

“His wife’s still inside.” 

Another one laughed, half–drunk. 

“So what?” 

“Since when did one woman ever satisfy a man?” 

“He’s only got one official wife?” 

“Hell, that’s practically restraint.” 

I was holding a steaming plate fresh off the stove, but it felt like someone dumped a bucket of ice over me. 

They used to call me Mrs. Sullivan with such fake respect. 

Now it just made my stomach turn. 

Zachary slammed his glass down harder than necessary and looked ready to snap. 

That’s when I cleared my throat and stepped out with the dish. 

“Dinner’s ready,” I said with a polite smile. 

Tried to sit down like nothing happened. 

But Zachary suddenly frowned, like he noticed something. 

“Why are there so many dishes Sophie doesn’t like?” 

Sophie waved a hand gently.. 

“It’s fine,” she said sweetly.

“I can just eat the salad.” 

“I’m sure your wife didn’t mean anything by it.” 

She said it like it was nothing, but her eyes were already watery. 

Zachary stood up, clearly annoyed now. 

“I’ll take you out to eat,” he said. 

“Wait.” 

I cut in, grabbing the wine bottle and pouring myself a glass. 

Zachary blinked, startled. 

In five years of marriage, I’d never once had a drink in front of him. 

“Sophie, this one’s for you,” I said. 

I tipped it back. 

The burn hit fast, and I started coughing hard. 

Zachary reached out instinctively, probably to pat my back. 

But I stepped away before he could touch me. 

Turned my 

face so he wouldn’t see the tears in my eyes. 

His hand hovered in the air for a second, then dropped. 

His expression darkened. 

“Nina, you’re being ridiculous.” 

He turned on his heel and left with Sophie. 

The rest of the officers shared an awkward glance, then followed. 

I stayed in the courtyard and finished the whole meal by myself. 

Two hours left until my flight back to D.C. 

I triple–checked my bags. 

Made sure nothing of mine was left behind. 

One hour left. 

Washed the dishes.

Left the signed divorce papers right in the center of the dining table 

Thirty minutes left. 

I closed the door and waited outside for the car. 

As I was stepping into the SUV, a young soldier jogging by gave me a stary pr 

“Ma’am, heading out?” 

I turned to answer, but my eyes caught the gash on his hand firm 

I sighed, pulled out a small packet of antiseptic powder from my coat. 

“Going home,” I said. 

“Sprinkle this on the cut and don’t get it wet for three days.” 

The kid scratched his head sheepishly. 

“Thanks, ma’am. You’re a good one.” 

“When you come back, I’ll be the first to pick you up!” 

I looked up one last time at the streaks of gold and scarlet across the sky. 

There won’t be a next time, I thought. 

By the time the sun fully set, Zachary returned with Sophie. 

The officers from earlier trailed behind, still laughing and chatting 

They carried takeout boxes–leftovers from the party I made. 

“We’re home, babe!” one of them called out. 

He stepped in, noticed the lights were off, and fumbled to light a candle. 

“Ma’am must’ve stepped out…” 

He set the boxes on the table- 

Then paused. 

There was a stack of papers waiting right in the center. 

His brows furrowed as he picked them up. 

“Colonel…” he called, voice uncertain. 

“She left you a letter.”
