The Cage of Lies - Chapter 04

Brittany.”
Seeing my icy stare, Jason stopped
pretending. “I did it because you were biased
against Brittany, constantly suppressing her. I
had no choice!”
“You wouldn’t believe how well Brittany
managed the company while you were gone.”
I sneered. “Managed well, or covered it up?
Do you know the deadline for the Luminary
project is today?”
<
Jason stared at Brittany.
Brittany smiled. “Don’t worry. Everything is
arranged. No need for you to worry.” “Sorry
to disappoint you, but I’m so amazing.”
Jason nodded. His phone rang. He showed it
to me.
nodded. His phone ran
“The client called to praise Brittany. You
really need to apologize to her.”
He answered the call on speakerphone.
The furious client yelled, “You idiots! We wanted Eleanor Evans’s designs! Why did you
submit an intern’s garbage? It’s a serious breach of contract! Prepare $100 million in damages, see you in court! You’ll go to jail!” The copyright of this content belongs to

Jason was stunned. “How? We’ve worked
together so many times without a single
problem!”
The call ended before he could explain.
I handled everything; he was a hands–off manager. He’d just praised Brittany, and now this happened. Too embarrassed to ask me for help, he frowned at Brittany.
“What happened? Didn’t you say it was handled?”
Brittany’s face was grim. “She’s awful! She said that about my hard work!” “It’s just a small project. Whatever.”
Jason’s eyes twitched. “That’s a hundred million dollar penalty!”
The company wasn’t big enough to afford
<
that. Their reputation was ruined; getting new
projects would be tough.
Brittany remained unconcerned. “So what? A
hundred million. Give it to her.”
She said it casually, like it was a dollar. It
didn’t matter to her; the company would pay.
Jason wouldn’t punish her.
Even Jason couldn’t take it. He regretted
promoting Brittany. He thought seven days
wouldn’t matter, but he’d changed his fate.
Brittany kept cursing the client.
Jason interrupted. “Shut up! I told you to be
careful and thorough! Why did you upload
your own design? You’re just an intern!”
Brittany pouted. “I’m a VP! What’s the point
of being a VP if I can’t even do that?”

“Besides, Jason, I just messed up a project.
It’s not the first time. Why are you so angry?”
She whined, complaining endlessly.
Her complaints explained things.
I’d overseen a project, personally checking
everything before submission. But the client
received a changed version.
Jason blamed me and scolded me. I’d
checked everything; Brittany deleted the
original files, uploaded the unedited version,
fearing asking for the correct one.
The client was furious, complaining that
nothing was fixed. Jason wanted to fire an
intern to apologize.
I refused. I took the blame, demoted and with
a pay cut. I apologized to the client, even
ended up in the hospital.
<
Now I learned it was Brittany’s fault. Jason
knew but let her do it, framing me.
Jason didn’t notice my reaction. He scolded
Brittany, then sighed.
“Forget it. Your skill is obvious. I don’t expect
much from you.”
He looked at me fondly. “Eleanor, you’re
amazing. I’m sure you can solve this. You
always handle tough projects and demanding
clients. I was wrong. Brittany is nowhere near
as good as you, my dear wife.”
Before I could refuse, Brittany was jealous.
“Jason, I’m not that bad!”
Jason scolded her. “Shut up! This is all your
fault! Being VP was just for fun and showing
off. Your skills aren’t good enough to handle
work!”
<
He scolded Brittany harshly. He surprisingly
sided with me, but I wasn’t happy. His praise
for Brittany was sincere; his praise for me
was superficial, followed by requests for help.
I used to love his sweet words, but now I
despised him.
When Jason asked for my help, I refused.
“I quit. I can’t interfere with company
matters.”
