Meeting Kane (Part 1) 

Thea’s POV

My entire body trembled with nerves. My heart was racing so fast I swore it would burst right out of my chest, and my stomach had twisted itself into knots that would make a sailor proud.

I stood outside the prison, staring up at the high walls, uncertain if should go in. I had no idea if I’d visited Kane before, but this felt important. To the me standing here now, this was like visiting a stranger. A stranger who happened to be my daughter’s father.

“Are you going in, or do you plan on staring at the wall all day? You’re fucking wasting my time,” the werewolf guard at the gate mocked, his attitude dripping with disrespect.

I clutched Phoenix tighter to my chest and glared at him. I could understand his impatience, but there was absolutely no need for him to be so damn rude… and besides, guarding the gate was literally his job, so I wasn’t wasting his precious “time” at all.

“What did you just say to me?” I snapped.

If there was one thing I hated, it was unwarranted rudeness.

He rolled his eyes, which pissed me off even more. I wanted to slap that smug look off his face.

“You heard me. I don’t think you’re deaf… what are you here for anyway? Are you some Rogue sympathizer? Or just a whore selling

herself? If it’s the latter, how much? I could take a break, have some fun.”

I was seriously fucking offended that he’d assumed I was a prostitute. Don’t get me wrong, I had no prejudice against people in that profession, but to be casually assumed to be one was straight–up disrespectful.

Shit. This was not how I wanted this day to start. True, I was nervous and anxious, but I was also looking forward to meeting my daughter’s father. Now this arrogant asshole had completely ruined my mood.

“Do you know who I am?” I growled, stepping closer to him.

I wasn’t even inside the prison area yet, and he’d decided to treat me like this. Was there some rule that I couldn’t take a few

seconds to calm my nerves before entering the prison?

“So who do you think you are?” His lips curled up in a contemptuous smirk. “Around here! Around here there aren’t more than three people who can talk to me like that.”

I flashed him my sweetest smile. “I’m Thea Sterling.”

I smiled as I watched his face. At first, he looked ready to roll his eyes again but then it was like a light went on in his brain. Immediately, fear took over his face, aging him a hundred years in a second.

It was just a lucky guess on my part, really. My name used to mean nothing to anyone, but now that seemed to have changed. I wasn’t sure if it was because Sebastian had accepted me, or because of my parents, or because of Kane. I didn’t know, but I wasn’t about to complain.

“I’m sorry, ma’am, I didn’t know it was you,” he apologized, but it didn’t move me one bit.

Your apology means absolutely nothing to me,” I said with a cold smile. “You were rude for no reason and made some pretty disgusting assumptions about me.”

“It won’t happen again, I promise.”

Meeting Kane (Part 1)

I snorted. How quickly his attitude changed now that he knew who I was, but what if I had been a nobody like I used to be?

I wasn’t fooled. He wasn’t genuinely sorry.

“Oh, trust me, it won’t happen again… because you’ll be getting a call from your superior very soon,” I said, no longer looking at him as I walked straight through the gate into the prison.

I wasn’t sure if I would actually go find his boss, but I wasn’t about to let this slide either. No one gets to disrespect me. He needed to be taught a lesson.

While fighting with the guard had temporarily, pushed my anxiety asikle, it came back a thousand times stronger as I walked toward the door marked “Visitors.”

I reached the door and went in. Before proceeding further, they asked for my details and who I was visiting. My heart was still pounding as I provided the information. Turned out I had been here once before.

After completing the formalities and getting my visitor’s pass, they led me in.

“Wait here. I’ll go get him,” another guard told me, directing me to sit at one of the tables.

I did as instructed. Phoenix was looking around at everything. Her usually comforting baby noises did nothing to calm my nerves right now. I guessed I’d only calm down once I saw the man.

A few minutes later, the guard approached with a man in silver handcuffs.

A memory, or what I thought was a memory, hit me. A man standing outside a house I didn’t recognize, flowers in his hand. He handed them to me, and I smiled, giving him a light peck on the lips.

The memory disappeared as quickly as it had come, leaving me breathless and confused. The man in the memory was the same one being led toward me now. I had no doubt this was Kane.

My eyes followed him as he sat down across from me. He turned to the guard, holding out his hands. After the guard removed his handcuffs, he faced me. His eyes were so dark, so similar to Phoenixs.

“Hello, Thea.”

Meeting Kane (Part 2) 

Thea’s POV

I stared at the father of my daughter. This man I had once trusted and been willing to have sex with. I tried to get my brain to function normally while my eyes recorded his features.

He looked different. Don’t get me wrong, he was still handsome, but he looked different from the man in that memory flash. He even had a beard now. It made him look even more handsome.

I knew I loved Sebastian, so why was I appreciating Kane’s appearance? No, I wasn’t appreciating. I was just noticing he was good- looking.

“Hi,” I finally responded. It was the only word I could get out.

I felt so awkward. So unsure of what to do or say.

His gaze shifted from me to our daughter. His unreadable expression changed. Softness and love took over.

“May I hold her?” he asked, his eyes still fixed on her.

It was obvious he loved Phoenix. Just that alone warmed my heart. I had been really worried he wouldn’t want anything to do with her. Worried he’d consider her a mistake. After all, he had just been using me while planning to kill me.

“Of course.”

I stood up and gently placed Phoenix in his outstretched arms.

Kane kissed her forehead. “Hey, little one.”

He tried to hide the tears in his eyes, but they were obvious.

Reading him was difficult. Just like Sebastian, he hid his emotions well. I didn’t know what I expected when I decided But I hadn’t expected to see warmth and tenderness.

After being told what he had done to me, I expected to see a cold, heartless villain. I was shocked to find that wasn’t the case. Iris had told me I was happy when I was with him. I was free, and he had helped me come out of my shell and become a different person.

I hadn’t believed her at first, but now I did. I felt nothing for him, but there was something about him. Something that drew me in.

“Thank you so much for bringing her. I haven’t seen her since the day she was born,” his voice was rough with emotion.

“Why? Haven’t Seraphina and Maximus brought her to see you?”

“She was in the NICU, remember?” he said softly. “Though they did bring me pictures of her.”

Sometimes I forgot Phoenix was premature. I kept forgetting that during the time I was in a coma, she had been in intensive care.

Tll try to bring her to see you regularly,” I promised him.

We were silent for a moment as he played with Phoenix’s tiny hand. She gripped his finger tightly, which made me wonder if, on a deeper level, she knew who he was. Werewolf children are always sensitive to these connections, so I couldn’t help but wonder if she was aware of their connection. I know it might sound ridiculous, but felt like she knew.

Meeting Kane (Part 2)

“While I’m glad you came, why did you? I’m surprised you would. Maximus told me you lost your memory.”

Shit. I guess I’d never get used to this. He was my biological parents adopted son, yet he and I had a daughter together.

“Besides bringing Phoenix to see you, I wanted to meet you. Get to know you as a person, since we’ll be co–parenting Phoenix.

“I’m surprised you’d do that,” he murmured, his eyes still on Phoenix

I was silent for a moment, ignoring his comment.

“I know what others have told me about you and me. Now I want to hear it from you. I want to know our story from you.”

He looked up at me. I saw surprise flash in his eyes. I guess he might have thought I’d just accept others‘ perspectives rather than

his.

He took a deep breath and began to tell the story.

He held nothing back. He told me everything, from how he discovered I was still alive to how he devised his evil plan, and finally how he executed it.

My heart ached with how he had manipulated me. I couldn’t imagine the heartbreak I must have felt when I discovered his betrayal. My lungs constricted. I felt like a fist was gripping my chest tightly.

I didn’t remember what happened, but his actions had left an imprint on my soul. That’s why his confession hurt so much.

I leaned back in my chair, just looking at him. By the time he finished, Phoenix was asleep, nestled against her father’s chest.

“I never properly apologized, but I’m truly sorry, Thea. I have no excuse for what I did to you, only my ridiculous reasoning–that the Alpha position should have been mine, not yours. You’ll never know how deeply I regret it,” his voice was more like a pained whisper.

The authenticity of his words was written in his eyes. I don’t know how I knew this, but deep down, I knew every word he spoke was genuine. What he did was a complete mess, but would I really hold it against him? Especially when he seemed so sorry?

“I don’t know what to say.”

It was true. I was speechless, feeling confused.

“I’m not saying what I did was right, but once I realized I was falling in love with you, everything changed. I thought I had it all under control at first, but you changed everything. I never expected you to come along, Thea, I never thought you’d upend my

world.”

Shit. What was I supposed to say when a man I had absolutely no memory of professed his love for me?

Fortunately, I didn’t have to say anything because one of the guards interrupted us.

“Time’s up.”

I silently watched him kiss Phoenix’s head before handing her back to me.

I may not remember what happened, but I hope we can put the past behind us and move forward for Phoenix’s sake. You seem like

a good person, and despite your mistakes, you deserve to know your daughter, so… friends?” I asked him hopefully.

At first, he looked shocked, but then a smile appeared on his lips.

Meeting Kane (Part 2)

“Friends.”

It was hard to fully grasp everything that had happened and how I felt about it all, but I knew this was a step in the right direction. “I’ll try to come often to let you see Phoenix.”

I’d appreciate that very much.”

He stood up, and the guard placed the handcuffs back on him. They were about to leave when Kane turned to face me.

“Be careful who you trust, Thea. Things aren’t always what they seem, and Sebastian is not as honest as he appears,” he warned.

“Take care.”

Before I could answer or ask him anything, they were gone. I walked toward the exit with my daughter in my arms, his warning about Sebastian still echoing in my mind. And strangely, why did I feel like this scene was somewhat familiar?
