Chapter 10
Rose’s POV
The car screeched to a halt in front of a sleek private hospital that belonged to my family. My mother wasted no time, yanking me from my seat and practically dragging me through the halls.
When we reached my father’s room, he was chatting casually with the doctor, a smile on his face.
“Are you trying to kill me with worry? Owen?!” my mother snapped, her voice laced with frustration and relief.
Despite being in a hospital gown, my father still exuded strength, though his once–dark hair had a sprinkling of silver. He turned to

the doctor with a scowl. “I told you, no phone calls to my wife.”
The doctor sighed, rubbing his temples. “I’m sorry, Mr. Merrick, but this is your fifth heart attack in just under three months. She needs to know.”
Both my mother and I froze, speaking in unison. “Know what?”
My father’s eyes locked onto me with a sharp glare. “The prodigal daughter finally returns.”
“Stop scowling, Owen. You’ll age yourself faster,” my mother teased, though her words were laced with affection.
“I’ve aged a hundred years because of this stubborn girl who refused to come back home for fifteen damn years!” My father’s

voice was rough with frustration.
“Lower your voice,” the doctor warned, his expression tense. “You’ll spike your blood pressure.”
“Shut up!” my father hissed, shooting daggers at him.
I hesitated before taking slow, deliberate steps toward my father, ignoring his cold, hard stare. But I wasn’t backing down.
When I finally reached him, I threw myself into his arms, clinging to him tightly.
“Get off me, you prodigal daughter!” he growled, but I only held on tighter.
“Come on, get your child off me, Elara,” he muttered.

“She’s your daughter too, Owen,” my mother shot back, a wry smile on her lips.
“Not after she abandoned me for fifteen years,” he grumbled, the bitterness clear in his voice.
“I’m sorry, Daddy” I whispered, my voice cracking with regret.
A heavy sigh escaped him, and then, to my surprise, his arms wrapped around me.
“I’m just glad you’re home. You’re safe,” he said, his voice thick with emotion.
I stayed in his embrace for a moment, recalling how, as a child, he used to lift me up on his shoulders to show me the world from a new height.
“Daddy, I can’t see the sky!” I’d complained.

He’d lift me higher and ask with a grin, “Can you see it now, baby?”
“Yes, Daddy, it’s beautiful,” I’d always reply, my voice full of awe.
And then, he’d say, “Yes, but you’re even more beautiful.”
Tears welled in my eyes, threatening to spill over as I held my father. It was as if all the lost time came rushing back–those precious memories of better days.
“I missed you, Daddy,” I said softly, pulling away just enough to look him in the eyes.
“I missed you too, Rose,” he muttered under his breath, the smile on his lips barely showing through the remnants of his stubbornness.

I smiled back, my heart swelling. “I know you’re thrilled to see me.”
“Shut up,” he grumbled playfully, his gruffness only adding to the familiarity.
But then, my mother’s voice cut through the air like a blade, serious and direct.
“As sweet as this reunion is, I need to know what’s really going on with my husband,” she said, her gaze hardening as she turned to the doctor.
The doctor exchanged an uncomfortable glance with my father, clearly reluctant to speak.
I folded my arms, sensing something deeper at play. “Whatever threats Dad’s made, he’s not scary enough to make her stop. Trust

me, Mom’s got him beat.”
The doctor sighed heavily. “Mr. Merrick is under immense stress from his work. It’s affecting his blood pressure and causing these heart attacks.”
My mother furrowed her brows. “But he’s been working there for years.”
The doctor nodded gravely. “That’s the issue. At his age, he should be scaling back, not handling the daily grind of more than fifteen global companies. He needs rest, not this constant pressure.”
“In other words,” my father muttered, “I should retire.”
“But that’s not the whole picture.” The doctor pressed on. “Mr. Merrick is facing mounting pressure from another company. It’s

affecting both him and the business.”
I looked at my father, concern flooding me. “What company? What’s going on?”
Even my mother was visibly worried now, her eyes narrowing as she stared at him. “What are you hiding from me, Owen?” she demanded, the tension in the air thickening.
My father groaned, glaring at the doctor. “I told you not to say anything.”
“Owen,” my mother said, her voice calm but deadly serious.
He let out a long breath. “Fine. It’s Whitmore Enterprise.”
I froze. “Serena’s family?”
He gave a terse nod, his lips tight.

“What did they do?” I asked, the anger already rising in my chest.
My father sank back into the pillows, exhaustion lining his features, but his voice was tinged with bitterness.
“Two years ago, we began developing a revolutionary new automobile tech. A fully electric engine that can diagnose and repair its own systems. It’s a decade ahead of anything else on the market.”
My eyes widened. That was huge.
“They came to us, claiming interest in a partnership. We showed them the prototype, shared the blueprint,” he scoffed, his voice bitter. “Like idiots.”
“They stole it, didn’t they?” I asked, my blood

boiling.
“Six months later, they filed for a patent under their name. They made just enough tweaks to confuse the courts, and now they’re suing us for stealing it.”
“But you’ve got proof, right?” My voice was sharp with anger.
He nodded slowly. “Yes. Full development logs, timestamped files, prototype footage… but…”
My mother and I leaned in, holding our breath.
“The judge assigned to the case is their older brother, he muttered, the words feeling like a cold punch to the gut.
I felt my blood run cold.

already started mass production.”
Up clenched my fists. “Then it’s time for you
to take the doctor’s advice and rest. I’ll deal with it. We’ll take down Whitmore Enterprise es for good.”
My father looked at me, concern in his eyes. “Are you sure, darling? Your mother has told me, you should be resting-
“Yes, but-”
“I’ll help,” a gravelly voice interrupted from behind me.
I spun around, my heart skipping a beat.
