Chapter 5
Rose’s POV
The moment Serena caught sight of Gideon and Nathaniel standing at the door, she bolted toward them, grabbing Gideon’s hands like a desperate lifeline. “She hurt baby Juliette!” she wailed, her voice high–pitched with feigned distress. “I only brought her some soup to cheer her up, and she threw it away!”
“You tried to poison me!” I shot back, fury flashing in my eyes. “You know damn well I’m allergic to seafood!”
Serena’s eyes widened in mock horror as she put on a show. “I had no idea, Gideon,” she sobbed, her tears flowing easily.

I rolled my eyes. It was pathetic how easily they fell for her performance. The audacity.
Gideon and Nathaniel moved toward me like soldiers marching to battle, their faces hard and cold.
“How could you be so heartless?” Nathaniel hissed, sneering as if I were beneath him.
“You think a night in jail hasn’t taught you anything? Do you want more punishment, Rose?” Gideon snarled, his eyes cold as ice.
I stared at them blankly, unable to feel anything but numbness. “What more do you want from me?” I asked, my voice flat. “Haven’t you done enough already?”
Gideon’s expression softened for a brief moment, but as soon as the baby’s cries pierced the air, his face hardened again.

“I’ll let you off the hook this time,” he muttered with no emotion, before walking away with Serena and the baby.
“Let me off the hook?” I let out a hollow laugh, my voice tinged with disbelief. “Do you even know what I’ve been through these last few days? Do you even care that I’ve lost-”
Serena interrupted me with her fake sobs. “We need to take Juliette to the doctor,” she whimpered, her voice dripping with sympathy.
And with that, the boys once again circled around her, following her like puppets,
leaving me behind. Their smirks were a final sting.
I stayed in the hospital for a few more hours, but they didn’t come back.

When the doctor discharged me, he gave me a final warning that I wasn’t sure I cared about anymore.
“You need to rest, or you won’t survive this,” he said gravely. “This is serious, Rose.”
I nodded absently. “I understand, Doctor.”
The apartment was quiet when I returned. They weren’t back yet. I headed straight to the room I once shared with Gideon, my chest tight as I grabbed a large box from the closet.
Carrying it outside, I set it in front of a large metal drum in the courtyard. A fire was soon crackling as I opened the box, memories rushing at me in waves.
Inside were photos from our wedding day,

gifts from both Gideon and Nathaniel over the years, things they had given me during anniversaries and birthdays, moments I had cherished.
But now? All of it seemed like a cruel joke. I tossed the pictures into the flames, watching them curl and burn. Each item that burned felt like a piece of my past being freed. How could I have been so stupid? I had loved them both, only to be thrown away like this.
The final item was a friendship bracelet. One I had made with the boys years ago, during a time when I still believed we were a family.
“I’ll protect you, Rose. I’ll never let anyone hurt you,” Nathaniel had promised me once, holding my hand with such sincerity.
“I’ll never let anyone hurt you. I’ll die first,” Gideon had vowed, kissing my forehead as if

his words could erase any doubt.
I smiled bitterly as I held the bracelet in my hands, the memories of their promises echoing in my mind. Without a second thought, I threw it into the fire.
The heat devoured it, and with it, every shred of trust I had left for them.
Suddenly, I heard footsteps. Nathaniel and Gideon appeared, both frozen in shock as they saw the flames.
“Are you out of your mind?” Nathaniel shouted, rushing forward to grab the bracelet, but the fire burned him before he could reach it.
“What are you doing? Why are you destroying our things?” Gideon demanded, his face twisted with anger.

I met his gaze coolly, unshaken. “They’re old. Time to let go of the past, I said flatly.
Without waiting for a response, I turned and walked away, heading upstairs.
As I entered my bedroom, my phone buzzed. It was my mom.
I picked up immediately, relieved to hear her voice.
“What happened, Rose?” she asked, her worry unmistakable. “Where have you been? Gideon keeps asking about you.”
I let out a quiet laugh. “I’m fine, Mom. Don’t worry. I just needed to clean things up here.”
There was a long sigh on the other end of the line. “I’m just glad you’re alright. Your

dad’s still upset about you running off all those years ago, but he’ll get over it.”
“I’ll make it up to him when I come back,” I promised, my voice firm.
“And about the wedding,” she added with a laugh, “Your father’s thrilled. He’s been waiting for this for a long time. I called to remind you to pick out your wedding dress. I sent you a few pictures of options.”
“Mom, don’t worry. When I get back, we’ll go dress shopping together,” I said, a small smile tugging at my lips.
“That sounds wonderful, dear,” she replied, her voice full of joy. “I’ll be waiting.”
“I’ll be there soon,” I reassured her, hanging up the phone.

Just then, the door slammed open. Gideon and Nathaniel stood in the doorway, their expressions full of disbelief.
“A wedding? What wedding?” Gideon
demanded, his tone harsh.
