Chapter 9
Julian didn’t take it. He stared at those words as if staring at something lethal.
“I won’t sign.”
I placed the papers on the stone steps beside us. “Then we’ll go through litigation.”
“Nora.” His head shot up, his eyes completely bloodshot. “Eight years-and you’re just throwing them away, just like that?”
I looked at him. “It’s not me throwing them away.” I said, “It’s you-you lost them, one piece ata
time.”
Julian shook his head. “I was just too busy.”
“Too busy to remember my birthday? Too busy to let someone else wear my ring? Too busy to take my mother’s keepsakes and build momentum for someone else? Too busy to make me stand in public and deny eight years of my own marriage?”
With every question I asked, his face went one shade whiter. By the end, he could barely stand.
I didn’t want to look anymore. Just as I turned to leave, he suddenly wrapped his arms around me from behind. So tight. So tight it felt as though he were trying to knead all the terror of these days
into his very bones.
“Nora. I love you.”
I closed my eyes for a moment. This sentence-I’d waited so many years for it. From the basement to the rental apartment. From nameless obscurity to Academy Award winner. From twentytwo
years old to thirty. By the time I finally no longer needed it, only then was he willing to speak it
aloud.
“Julian.” I said softly, “Do you know what hurts me the most?”
He buried his face in my shoulder, his voice trembling beyond recognition. “What?”
“It’s that you’re telling me you love me now-and I’m not even a little bit happy.”
>His body went rigid in an instant.
I peeled his fingers away, one by one. “Go back.” “I’m not going back.” “Iris is still waiting for you.” “She and I have nothing to do with each other anymore.”

I turned my head and looked at him. “But she did wait for you. And you felt you owed her. I waited eight years for you-and you took it for granted.”
He was utterly unable to speak.
After that day, Julian remained in Iceland for seven days. Wherever I went, he followed from a distance. Never drawing close, never daring to disturb.
I went to the seaside to take photos-he stood behind the windbreak. I went to the supermarket to buy medicine-he passed his payment code to the cashier, and I returned it. I went to watch the aurora-he stood out in the snow in his expensive coat, like a person abandoned at the edge of the world.
On the evening of the seventh day, the aurora finally appeared. Green light spread across the entire sky. Everyone around me was cheering.
Julian stood far behind me and suddenly called out, his voice ragged: “Nora!”
I didn’t turn my head. His voice was shredded by the wind. “You said before-you wanted to watch
the light at the world’s end together with me.”
I tilted my head back and looked at the sky. It was so beautiful. Beautiful enough that my tears finally fell.
“Julian.” I said with my back to him, “You came too late.”
