Chapter 4 

I sneered to myself: “Kyson must beat her regularly–he’s driven her completely insane. Fifty million dollars? Why doesn’t she just ask for the entire company?” 

A figure flashing past the window looked strangely familiar. I pressed my face against the glass to get a better look. 

After confirming I wasn’t mistaken, I suddenly smiled. 

“Lyla, how are things between you and Kyson lately?” 

Hit where it hurt, Lyla’s expression instantly changed. 

“What do you mean? We’re perfectly happy! A woman like you who can’t get a man would never understand!” 

Strangely, when she said this, Owen, who was sitting across from me, frowned. 

I couldn’t understand why Owen looked displeased. 

I tapped on the car window and video–called Lyla. 

“That man coming out of the Chanel store with another woman -isn’t that Kyson?” 

That day was Lyla’s most unhinged day. She went completely ballistic, cursing like a maniac.

I couldn’t be bothered with her, so I left the phone on the seat. and went shopping with Lily. 

When I came back, she was still ranting. 

I had to admire her stamina. 

But after that day, probably sensing the crisis, Lyla quieted down for a while. 

We met again at a family gathering where she announced her 

pregnancy. 

Though her belly was still flat, she couldn’t stop caressing it. 

She wanted the whole world to know she was carrying Kyson’s 

child. 

When she saw me, she rolled her eyes. 

“What’s the point of some people working themselves to death? They’ll never experience the joy of being a woman–how pathetic! 

“Having a husband and children by your side is the best destiny for us women!” 

I was curious about her logic. We’re sisters–who exactly taught her this theory that women must depend on men?

The temperature outside was scorching, and even with the air conditioning on, it felt stuffy indoors. 

Yet Lyla was wearing long sleeves and pants, covering herself completely. The little skin that showed was bruised. 

Her situation with Kyson was no secret in our circle. Ever since their wedding, the Graham family had withdrawn their investment from the Tran family. 

Kyson was forced to kneel for an entire month. His father even pointed at his nose and called him a bastard who couldn’t amount to anything. 

Kyson took all his rage out on Lyla. Every night, screams could be heard from their room. 

Of course I knew what was going on. Resting my chin on my hand, I smiled and asked: 

“It’s so hot, Lyla. Why are you wearing so much?” 

Her smile instantly froze, and she instinctively tried to hide the bruises on her body. 

“I get cold easily since I got pregnant! Mind your own business! 

“You should focus on finding yourself a man! You’re so old now, I’m embarrassed for you!”

I’m only 25 this year.

Owen is four years older than me, so by that logic, he should feel ashamed about being single too. 

I suddenly froze. 

Why was I thinking about Owen? 

My fork suspended in mid–air, I couldn’t continue eating. 

Lately, Owen and I had been meeting quite frequently, though he always came with Lily. 

But he runs a major company–doesn’t he have work to do? 

Even someone as oblivious as me should understand what this 

meant! 

My face suddenly felt hot. 

Mom keenly noticed my change and immediately asked curiously: “Helen, do you have someone you like?” 

Usually quick with words, I found myself speechless and stammered: “No!” 

In the end, I could only flee the scene in panic.

While lost in thought, a pair of hands suddenly wrapped around me from behind. 

I turned around in shock to find Kyson’s disgusting face. 

“Lyla’s pregnant and can’t keep me company. You’re her sister- you should help me out. 

“You’re smart. You should know the Tran family could take your career to the next level. You get what I’m saying, right?” 

Seeing him lean in to kiss my face, I shouted: “Get away from me!” 

I kicked him hard!
