Chapter 319 The Name Garret Erased

Lady Flourish POV

83

Finished

The last Hollow Ridge wolf shifted back first. He was breathing hard, his shirt torn across one shoulder, and blood ran down the side of his neck from an old wound that had reopened during the shift.

I looked at him, then at the woman standing beside the ruined building.

My sister.

The thought still felt strange.

“Before we leave,” I said, “you need to tell me your name yourself to be sure you haven’t been making a mistake.”

She looked at me for a few seconds.

“My real name?”

“Yes.”

She glanced toward the forest where the others were gathering.

“My name is Amara.”

The name felt different from everything I had learned about her.

Amara.

I repeated it quietly, trying to connect it to the face I had spent days seeing in old photographs and security images.

She shook her head.

“Don’t look at me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like you’re trying to decide whether I belong in your life.”

I frowned.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to think.”

“That makes two of us.”

Damian came to stand beside me. His wolf was still close to the surface after the attack, and his eyes remained partly shifted.

Amara noticed him.

“I don’t want him speaking for you.”

“He doesn’t.”

“Good.”

Damian said nothing.

I looked at Amara again.

“Who gave you that name?”

“Our mother.”

My throat tightened.

“Elara?”

She nodded.

I had heard my mother’s name from her so many times since we met that it was becoming difficult to separate the woman I remembered from the mother she had known.

“Did Garret ever call you Amara?”

Her expression hardened.

“Once.”

“Once?”

“When I was very young.”

“What happened?”

“He stopped using it.”

I waited.

Amara folded her arms.

“After they decided I had to disappear, Father ordered everyone around him to stop using my name. He said my name could not appear in any document, medical file, transport record, school record, pack registry, or family archive.”

My stomach turned.

“Why?”

“Because a name creates a trail.”

She looked directly at me

“And he wanted mine gone.”

I could not speak.

Rhys approached us, phone in hand.

“Flourish, we need to move. We have another team approaching from the east.”

Damian looked at him.

“How far?”

“Five minutes, maybe less.”

“Get everyone into the vehicles.”

Rhys nodded and moved away.

I stayed where I was.

“Did he erase me too?” Amara asked.

I looked at her.

“No.”

“Of course not.”

There was no anger in her voice. That made it worse.

“He kept you,” she said. “He gave you the family name. He let everyone know you existed.”

“I didn’t know about you.”

“I know.”

“You think I should have known?”

“No.”

Her answer came quickly.

“That’s the part I hate.”

I stared at her.

“You didn’t choose this.”

“Neither did you.”

“I know.”

:

“Then stop looking at me like you owe me something.”

I looked away.

My wolf had been quiet since Amara gave me her name.

Now she moved closer.

“She’s ours.”

I closed my eyes for a second.

The word hurt.

Not because I rejected it.

Because I didn’t know what to do with it.

Damian touched my back.

I turned toward him.

“I spent my whole life thinking I was the only child.”

“You were told that.”

“By my father.”

“That doesn’t make it your fault.”

I shook my head.

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

“He knew she existed.”

“Yes.”

“And he let me grow up believing she was dead or never existed.”

Damian’s expression tightened.

“He made that decision before you were old enough to understand what the bloodline was.”

“I still lived with the consequences.”

“So did she.”

His voice was quiet.

“That doesn’t mean you have to punish yourself for it.”

I looked at him.

“I don’t know how not to.”

He took my hand.

“Then don’t solve it tonight.”

Amara watched us.

For once, she didn’t look suspicious.

She looked tired.

“I was told you were protected,” she said.

I frowned.

“What?”

“That’s what Father told people. That I was being protected because the bloodline needed one vessel hidden.”

Her eyes dropped to our joined hands.

“He didn’t tell me you were protected too.”

“I wasn’t.”

“You were.”

“No. I was controlled.”

She looked at me.

I swallowed.

“He decided where I lived, what I knew, who I trusted, and what parts of my family history I was allowed to see.”

Amara’s face changed.

“Then he lied to both of us.”

“Yes.”

The word came out before I stopped it.

I had defended Garret in my mind for years. Even after everything he had done, there had been a part of me that wanted to believe there was a reason behind every secret.

Now I had another piece of proof.

He erased his own daughter.

Not from my memory.

From the world.

Amara reached into the pocket of her jacket and pulled out a small folded paper.

“This is all I have.”

I took it.

It was old and creased, with faded handwriting across the top.

My eyes stopped on the first line.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

There was no Stonehedge seal or family crest. It looked like something someone had hidden quickly and carried for years. The handwriting was familiar, too. I could not tell whether it belonged to my mother or a healer who had kept Amara alive.

“Where did you get this?”

“One of the healers who protected me kept it.”

I read the line again.

My family name sat beside hers.

“I want to find the rest.”

Amara looked at me.

“The records?”

“All of them. Birth records. Medical records. Anything Father ordered destroyed. I want to know how many people knew about me and how long they helped him keep me hidden.”

Her voice shook on the last sentence, but she did not look away.

I understood that feeling. I had spent too many months discovering that people had known things about me before I did.

“I want those answers too,” I said.

“So do I.”

Damian stepped closer.

“We will.”

She studied him.

“You’re very sure.”

“I don’t make promises to people I don’t intend to keep.”

Amara looked at me again.

I folded the paper carefully.

For years, I had thought the missing pieces of my family were secrets I needed to uncover for myself.

Now I knew one missing piece had a name.

Amara.

And Garret had spent years making sure I would never hear it.
