Chapter 338 The Dead Warriors Record

Alpha Damian POV

The reply came back while I was still standing beside the table, waiting for the archive team to finish comparing the scent sample. The message was from F-Tech’s records unit.

They had located the original biometric file and needed my authorization to open the restricted section.

I entered the code Rhys had sent and watched the file load on the wall screen.

A photograph appeared first, followed by a name, service history, medical notes, and the date Stonehedge had recorded the warrior’s death. The face was older than I remembered, but I knew him.

“Confirm the identity,” I told the analyst on the call.

“We’re checking the biometric markers against the archived sample now,” she replied. “The scent match led us to the file, but we won’t mark it confirmed until the records agree.”

That was the right answer. Scent could be copied, altered, or planted, as the traces around the estate had already shown.

The earlier sample had matched a former Stonehedge warrior closely enough to demand another look, but I would not let a resemblance turn into a conclusion.

I pulled up the service record. He had served in Stonehedge’s border unit and later joined a small team sent to support the Eastern Army confrontation.

The report listed him among the wolves killed during the retreat.

I remembered the brief announcement and the sealed casualty file, though I had not been present when his body was recovered.

“Where is the death verification?” I asked.

The analyst opened another attachment. It contained a field report, a healer’s note, and a signed confirmation from the officer who had led the recovery team.

The documents supported the official account, but none included a full biometric record from the body. I read the pages twice, looking for a detail that would settle the matter.

“There’s no complete scan,” I said.

“No, Alpha. The archive has his earlier registration data and a partial medical record. That is

enough for comparison, but not enough to establish what happened after the confrontation.”

The answer left room for too many possibilities. The body might have been damaged beyond recognition, the report might have been rushed, or someone might have used the confusion to make a living wolf disappear.

I would not choose among those explanations until we had evidence.

Rhys joined the call from F-Tech headquarters. He had the restricted archive open on his screen and was checking the original registration against the sample collected outside the

estate.

“The biometric markers agree,” he said. “Facial structure, old injury records, and the identifying pattern in his blood profile all point to the same wolf.”

“Can anyone else access this file?”

“Not without leaving a record. I’ve frozen access while we finish the review.”

The analyst brought up the pack-bond entry. It showed the date the warrior’s bond to Stonehedge had been severed. I leaned closer to the screen, then checked the date against the reported death.

“How long before he was declared dead?” I asked.

“Three days,” Rhys said. “The bond was severed three days before the casualty report was entered.”

“Was it severed by the Alpha?”

“The record doesn’t say. It only shows that the bond ended. There’s no attached order, no healer’s explanation, and no note of a formal release.”

A pack bond could weaken when a wolf was far from home, but it did not simply vanish because someone crossed a border.

A formal severance required a reason and, in most cases, a record. If the warrior had been presumed dead after the confrontation, the timing made no sense. His bond had ended while he was still officially alive.

I called up the details of the earlier scent investigation. The sample had not given us a name at the time, only a match close enough to reopen old files.

Now the biometric record connected that scent to a wolf whose death had never been fully verified. The watcher outside our estate might have been him, or someone carrying a scent taken from him. Either possibility meant the planted traces had been chosen for a reason.

“Could the bond have been cut to hide him from Stonehedge?” I asked.

ab

“It’s possible,” Rhys said. “But the archive can’t tell us who initiated it or where he went afterward.”

I looked at the casualty report again. The officer’s signature was genuine according to the records, but a real signature did not prove every detail in the report was true.

I had seen enough pack disputes to know that a signed document could preserve a lie as easily as it could preserve the truth.

“Send me every version of the report, including drafts and access logs,” I ordered. “I want to know who entered the death date, who approved it, and who opened this file after it was sealed. Keep the archive restricted. Nobody outside this call gets a copy until I review the access list.”

Rhys nodded and began assigning the requests. I asked the analyst to preserve the biometric match and the bond record separately, with a clear note that identity was confirmed but survival was not.

We had to keep those facts apart. The file identified the wolf connected to the scent. It did not prove that he had stood outside the estate himself.

When the call ended, I remained at the table with the two dates on the screen. The pack bond had been severed before the reported death, and the body record was incomplete.

Someone had made it possible for a wolf to disappear from his pack before the pack declared him dead.

My first thought was the Eastern Army. The confrontation had given someone the chance to take wolves off the field and bury their names in casualty reports.

But I had no proof that the Army had done it, and I would not turn suspicion into an accusation just because it fit the pattern.

The watcher’s scent was only one piece. If the enemy had learned how to remove a wolf from his pack bond, hide him in the records, and use his scent years later, then this was not limited to one former operative.

They could have been gathering wolves everyone else believed dead or missing.

I sent a message to the Dartwood patrol commander, ordering the estate perimeter checked again and every collected scent sample preserved. Then I contacted Harold through the secure line. I told him F-Tech had confirmed the former operative’s identity and found an unexplained severance in his pack-bond record.

I did not tell him the wolf was alive, because the evidence had not proved that.

Harold’s reply came quickly. “Send the record. I’ll check Stonehedge’s original files.”

I forwarded the restricted documents, keeping the missing proof clearly marked. Before I could close the archive, Rhys sent one final note: the severance entry had been accessed again two days ago.

I read the timestamp, then looked back at the casualty report. Someone had returned to the dead warrior’s record while we were investigating the scent.

“Find out who opened it,” I told Rhys. “And don’t alert them that we know.”
