“You really don’t need to keep up this act anymore. If you’re worried about how a divorce might affect your company, rest assured. I won’t use that to threaten you, nor will I take you to court to leave you penniless. I’ll only take what’s rightfully 

mine, not a penny more.” 

He hurriedly spoke up, “That’s not it, Nora. I’m not worried about the company, I just…” 

“Don’t say you love me,” I scoffed. “Hah! I’m just a washed–up old hag that people mock. How could I compare to all those 

pretty young things around you?” 

“David Brooks, I believe you truly loved me once. But I know what you’re like when you love me, so I can tell immediately 

when you don’t.” 

“I was foolish before. I knew you wanted children, so I thought getting pregnant would tie your heart to me. But now I see how terribly wrong I was.” 

“I didn’t just hurt myself, I hurt him too. Maybe your mother was right – we should never have been together in the first 

place. Our backgrounds, our values, they’re completely different. We were never a good match. I used to resist that idea, but 

now… I accept it.” 

He grabbed my hand, tears falling onto the bedsheet. “I’m sorry…” 

I pulled away again. “David, for the sake of the love we once shared, please, let me go.” 

“I’m just… so tired.” 

David wiped his tears and stood by the bed, looking at me. “Nora, I know you hate me. I can… let you leave. But I won’t give 

up.” 

With that, he turned and left the hospital room. 

The room was pitch black. I stared blankly at the white wall. 

My hand unconsciously moved to my stomach. 

It was completely flat now. Apart from the slightly loose skin, there was no trace left of the child that had been there. 

I couldn’t hold back anymore. I buried my head in the blanket and sobbed uncontrollably.
