Chapter 7
Wednesday night, Casey got stuck working late.
I was reheating leftovers at her place when someone rang the doorbell.
Checked the peephole. Eric.
Standing in the hallway clutching this bouquet of baby’s breath wrapped in pale purple paper with some ribbon tied
around it.
I didn’t open up. Just yelled through the door. “How the hell did you find this place?”
“Casey’s your only friend. I asked around at your office.”
“Stop coming to my office.”
I stood there for a second, then cracked the door open.
His eyes immediately shot past me into Casey’s apartment.
Her living room lights were glowing warm yellow.
He leaned forward like he was gonna step inside, then caught himself.
I stayed planted in the doorway.
He shoved the flowers toward me.
Little card clipped to the ribbon. Scribbled on it: Sorry.
Three years. First flowers he’d ever bought me.
My hand touched the wrapping paper. It was cold and wet.
I pulled back.
“Baby’s breath. Lady at the flower shop said girls love these.”
“I like sunflowers.”
His arm just hung there mid-air.
لميم السلام
Chapter 7
“Wait-since when do you like sunflowers?”
“Since forever.”
He slowly dropped his arm and slumped against the doorframe.
“Look, I got rid of all that stuff. Her old things. I know I screwed up, but come on-can’t you cut me some slack here?”
“You only threw it out after I left. If I’d stayed, it’d still be sitting there collecting dust.”
The motion light down the hall clicked off. Just the one above us stayed on.
“Eric. I talked to Jenna.”
His face went white.
“Why the hell would you call her?!”
“I didn’t. She called me. You told your mom to track down my number and your mom went to her.”
“My mom had no right-”
“She got married last year.”
His hand crushed the bouquet so hard the paper crunched.
Couple stems snapped. Little white petals dropped onto his shoes.
He didn’t even notice.
“She’s… married?”
When I told him I wanted a divorce? He said I was being overdramatic.
Jenna gets married and he literally can’t hold a bouquet without destroying it.
“You seeing this?”
He blinked hard and shook his head.
“No-it’s not like that-”
“Then what IS it like? I say divorce and you act like I’m throwing a tantrum. She gets married and you’re standing here crushing flowers. Look at what you’re doing.”
He glanced down.

Chapter 7
The card had slipped. Sorry was facedown in the crumpled paper.
“Lawyer sent over the draft. You’ll get it in your email tomorrow. Read it.”
“Diana-”
“It’s late. Go home.”
I stepped back and shut the door.
Lock clicked.
I watched him through the peephole.
He just stood there forever.
Finally bent down, set the mangled bouquet on the doormat, and left.
Hallway light flickered on for half a second, then went black.
