Chapter 3
I was still staring at the King’s message when an unknown number called.
I knew who it was before he spoke.
“You think one message from Thorne means he wants you?” Kane laughed. “He was being polite, Lyra. Kings do that. You really think a man like that would look twice at a wolfless reject?”
I slid into the back of my car and shut the door. “You made a new number just to tell me that? That’s sad,
Kane.”
“I’m doing you a favor. Somebody has to tell you the truth.”
As he kept talking, memories flashed through me like a broken film reel.
Kane driving four hours through a snowstorm because I mentioned I’d never seen the sunrise from Pikes
Peak.
Kane learning to bake my mother’s honey cake from an old recipe card, burning it six times before he got it
right.
Kane holding my hand under the table at pack dinners, his thumb tracing circles on my skin, his eyes
saying soon.
My father had given me everything except a warning. He never taught me how to spot a wolf in a lover’s
clothes.
So I gave Kane everything. I let him take over my father’s office. I let him replace Dad’s loyal warriors with his own friends. I signed every paper he put in front of me.
Then, a year ago, two days after I left for the North, Bianca found that funeral photo on Kane’s old phone. Tessa told me later what happened. Bianca laughed and said, Didn’t know you were into whales, Alpha. Everyone in the room laughed with her.
Kane’s face had turned to stone.
After that, his calls got shorter. His texts got colder. I thought he was tired. Now I knew. He was ashamed
of me.
“Are you finished?” I asked.
“No, I’m not finished.” His voice dropped, low and ugly. “You want the truth? Here it is. I never loved you. Your father’s will said the Alpha title passes through his bloodline. I needed the bond. I needed you. That’s it. You were a key, Lyra. A big, sweaty, crying key.”

The car went silent.
:
Somewhere inside my chest, something that had been bleeding for a year finally stopped.
“And now you don’t need the key anymore,” I said.
“Smart girl. Tomorrow, at midnight, when the Blood Moon rises, I’m going to reject you. In front of the whole pack. Then I’ll crown Bianca as my Luna.” He laughed softly. “You know what rejection does to a wolfless girl, don’t you? Some of them never get out of bed again. Some of them don’t survive.”
My heart pounded, but not with fear.
“Why tell me?”
“Because I want you to spend tonight crying. Wear something with an elastic waist. You’ll need room to fall apart.”
He hung up.
I sat very still. Then I opened the black circle and typed:
[Thank you, Your Majesty. I’ll be there at seven.]
His answer came in two seconds.
Alaric Thorne: [Good. Tomorrow, I’ll welcome you home properly.]
I looked out at the city lights, and deep inside me, something stretched. Something with silver fur and
teeth.
A low growl rolled through my mind.
Let me out, my wolf whispered.
Soon, I told her.
Kane thought he was going to break a helpless, wolfless girl at midnight.
He had no idea she didn’t exist anymore.
And he had no idea who would be doing the rejecting.
