Chapter 1
My mate rejected me in front of three hundred wolves.
My father didn’t growl.
My mother stared at the floor.
My five brothers let him walk away breathing.
Then my whole pack erased me for a year.
Tonight, I’m erasing myself back.

I rolled my old truck down the gravel road with the headlights off. I passed the border stones, where the guards change shifts at 2:10 a.m. and never once look left. At the edge of our territory I stopped and looked back at the packhouse !
was born in.
Thirty–one windows. Every single one lit.
Not one of them watching for me.
“Goodbye,” I whispered. “You won’t miss me. I’ll miss you anyway. That’s the part that makes me pathetic.”
Then I turned the key.
My name is Sienna Ashford. Only daughter of Alpha Gideon Ashford, the wolf who rules the northern woods of Minnesota and never has to raise his voice. Five older brothers. A mother who used to call me her moon–blessed
miracle.
Used to.
One year ago tonight was my twenty–first birthday. The night of my Mating Ceremony.
My mother planned it for four months. Midnight blue and silver, because I hate pink. White roses. Candles floating on
the lake. She got every detail right.
Then Logan Hale stepped into the circle.
Heir to the Crescent Moon pack. The boy I’d loved since I was sixteen. The moment the moon cleared the trees, the bond snapped into place between us, and I felt it all the way down to my bones.
Mate.

He felt it too. I watched it hit him.

Then he smiled at me, cold as January, and said it loud enough for three hundred wolves to hear.
“I, Logan Hale, future Alpha of Crescent Moon, reject you, Sienna Ashford, as my mate and my Luna. I’ve found
someone worth more.”
A rejection tears something out of you. Ask any wolf. It felt like a hand reaching into my chest and pulling out a rib.
I dropped to my knees in my blue dress.
And here’s the part I still can’t explain.
Nobody moved.
Not my brothers, who once put a boy through a wall for touching my hair. Not my father, who has stared down rogue armies and never blinked. Not my mother.
Three hundred wolves watched an Alpha’s daughter get thrown away like garbage, and my family stood there like
stone.
The next morning, I woke up and the pack link in my head was gone.
Every wolf is born connected to her pack. You hear them in the back of your mind your whole life. Your mother saying goodnight. Your brothers arguing about nothing. A warm, constant hum that means you belong somewhere.
I woke up to silence.
Then a cold snap behind my eyes, like a door slamming in an empty house. And I knew, the way you always know,
whose hand had done it.
My oldest brother Marcus had cut me out of the link.
I ran to the border to clear my head. The ward stones hummed and threw me backward onto the dirt. They’d been reset overnight. Every wolf in our pack could pass.
Every wolf except me.
I told myself it was a bad week.
Then a bad month. Then two hundred breakfasts alone at a table set for eight.
Once, I dropped a coffee mug at my father’s feet. On purpose. Just to see if he’d look up..
He stepped over the pieces and kept walking.

That was the night I stopped being their daughter and became a ghost in their house. And a ghost sees everything. I
know every guard rotation. I know which hallway the wind doesn’t carry scent through. I know exactly which minute
the border wolf takes his smoke break.
Which is how I’m leaving right now, with one duffel bag holding everything I own.
I’m not running away.
I’m reporting for duty.
Eleven days ago, a black envelope arrived at a P.O. box my pack doesn’t know exists. Inside, one card, stamped with a
silver crown and a wolf’s head.
Applicant S. Wilde: accepted.
Report to Draven Hall. The King’s Wardens.
Tell no one.
I hit the gas and didn’t look in the mirror.
By sunrise, my family would have a house with one empty room in it.
It would take them eleven days to notice.
And when they did, my mother’s howl would wake every wolf in the northern woods.
