Chapter 6
Sunday night, I asked Maya to cut my hair.

In sparring, two wolves had grabbed it and put me on the mat, and I have exactly enough ego to hate losing. It came
off just above my shoulders. Sharp. Clean.
When I walked out, my whole team howled and pounded the table like animals.
“You look like a woman about to ruin a man’s entire year,” Maya said.
“That’s the idea.”
Monday morning I wore black. Black suit, black boots, and the silver crown pin at my collar that only the Head Warden
wears.
Jonah handed me coffee without looking up. “You know they all still think you’re a man, right?”
“Last time I checked,” I said, “I lack the equipment.”
“You’ve got the teeth, though, Boss,” Maya said into her cereal.
I was still laughing when I ran up to the Council chamber nine minutes late.
I opened the doors.
Eight Alphas around a long black table. Old wolves who control half the forests and a frightening number of human judges. Kael at the head, leaning back in his throne–like chair.
And Garrett Crane, smirking, halfway through a story.
Every head turned.
“My apologies for being late, Your Majesty,” I said. “One of my people had to remind me I lack the equipment to qualify
as a man, and I lost track of time.”
Somebody choked on his coffee.
“I’m S. Wilde. Head Warden.”
Eight Alphas rearranged their entire understanding of the last six months.
Kael’s face didn’t move at all. His eyes were absolutely dancing.

“Miss Wilde,” he said. “Congratulations on the Colorado treaty. Forty–seven minutes. A record.”
“Thank you, sir. Would you excuse me one moment? There’s something I have to do.”
I walked the length of the table.
Garrett leaned back and opened his mouth to say something clever about my height.
I hit him once. Everything I had. Right on the hinge of the jaw.
He went off the chair like a sack of laundry.
Nobody moved. Not one Alpha. Not the King.
I crouched beside him and made my voice very quiet and very pleasant.
“Maya Brooks. Friday. Outside the kitchens. You told her if she didn’t come to your room, you’d end her career.”
His face went the color of wet cement.
“If you ever threaten a female wolf’s rank to get her into your bed again, the King will be the least of your problems. Are
we clear?”
He tried to rise. I shifted my weight two inches.
He stayed down.
“Miss Wilde,” Kael said. Very calm. “Explain.”
So I did. Then I asked the question that stopped every wolf in that room from breathing.
“Eleven women have left your Wardens in ten years, sir. Nine after a report from this man. How many of those reports
came after they told him no?”
Kael didn’t answer.
He lifted two fingers.
The doors opened. Two of his guards walked in, picked Garrett up by the arms, and dragged him through the door at
the back of the chamber.
The one that leads down to the cells.
“After this meeting,” Kael said into the silence, “I’ll speak to each of you alone. If anyone at this table has ever used
those tactics, think carefully about what you’d like your last honest sentence to be.”

Seven old Alphas went pale.
Kael didn’t look at them. He was looking at me.
Not the way a king looks at a servant. Like a man who’d just found something he’d stopped believing existed.
My heart did something stupid. I ignored it. I was working.
Then a guard put his head through the door.
“Your Majesty. Forgive me. The Crescent Moon delegation is here. They’re early.”
And in walked the man who rejected me in front of three hundred wolves.

Logan Hale still looked like a magazine cover. Dark suit. Perfect hair. That smile that used to make me forget my own
name.
He was halfway through his bow when the wind from the open window hit him.
My scent.
His head snapped up. The color drained from his face.
A rejected bond never fully dies. It leaves a scar. And I watched his scar rip open right there in the doorway.
“Sienna?”
Every Alpha at the table turned to look at me.
Sienna. Not Wilde.
Six months of secrets, gone in one word.
Old Alpha Holloway muttered, “Sienna? The Ashford girl?”
And somebody whispered, “Gideon Ashford’s daughter has been missing for months. The whole north is searching for
her.”
