Chapter 16
“Why?” Caleb screamed, struggling against his bonds as he was dragged away. “Just because I’m not strong like you, I can’t lead? It’s not fair!”
“You’re not fit to lead because of the darkness in your heart,” Mason stated flatly. Then he nodded to the guards. “Take him away.’
As for Ava, she was banished from the clan territories entirely.
The next day, Mason’s succession ceremony proceeded flawlessly. Hand in hand, we took our seats on the raised dais as the new Alpha and Luna. Below us, row upon row of werewolves bowed in
deference.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Ava lurking just outside the great hall, her gaze filled with bitter
hatred.
I knew she wouldn’t let this go.
Sure enough, she called me the very next day. “Chloe,” she said, her voice surprisingly calm, “I’ve done a lot of thinking. I was wrong. I’m… I’m leaving the country. Will you and Mason have one last meal with me? For old times’ sake?”
“Of course,” I agreed brightly.
The next morning, I asked Mason to take me to see her. These days, he rarely refused me anything.
The more he doted on me, the more terrified I became, terrified this happiness was borrowed and would vanish one day.
Ava had chosen a cliffside restaurant overlooking Crystal Bay. She’d applied makeup carefully, but it couldn’t fully conceal the yellowing bruises on her face.
Before we sat, she took a bite from every dish on the table. “See?” she said with a strained smile. “No poison. You can eat safely.”
Mason ignored her, serving the best portions onto my plate instead. “Eat up. You’re eating for two
now.”
Ava’s eyes widened. “You’re pregnant?”
I placed a hand on my still-flat stomach and smiled. “Yes. I’m hoping for a boy, but Mason says he wants a girl.”

I watched as the flames of pure envy ignited in her eyes. She clenched her fists, visibly fighting for control. “That’s wonderful, Chole. Eat well. Let’s… let’s put the past behind us.”
Just then, a faint, sweet fragrance filled the air.
Mason and I slumped forward simultaneously, collapsing onto the table.
Ava stood up, her face twisting into a mask of venomous triumph. “Just as stupid as last time,” she hissed, pulling a knife from her bag. “Goodbye.”
As she lunged, Mason shifted in a blur of motion. His powerful wolf form emerged, and his jaws clamped down on her wrist.
She screamed in agony. “Let go of me!”
I calmly sat up, brushing imaginary dust from my sleeves. “You’re wrong, Ava. You’re the one who never learns, using the same trick twice.”
I’d anticipated her using toxic gas again. Mason and I had taken the antidote beforehand.
Rage and shock contorted her features. “You… you remember too? How? It’s not fair!”
Mason released her with a snarl, sending her stumbling to the floor. I walked over and stood above her. The fabric of her sleeve was torn, revealing the lattice of old scars beneath.
I leaned down, my voice barely a whisper. “You know, if you hadn’t tried to kill me again, I might have warned you. Caleb was never the good one.”
Fury blazed in her eyes. “You bitch!” she spat, trying to rise.
I slapped her hard across the face. As her other hand flew up to retaliate, I caught her wrist and snapped it with a sharp, practiced twist.
She screamed, her face white with shock and pain. “You… you know how to fight?”
She had no idea. From the moment I was reborn, I was determined to protect myself. I’d learned combat, studied medicine, mastered the art of strategy.
“Being reborn doesn’t give you a free pass, Ava,” I said coldly. “You still have to work for it.
I turned to Mason. “Lock her up with Caleb. Let them have each other.”
“No! Please, Chloe, no! Don’t send me back to him! I’m begging you!” Ava’s screams turned to
desperate pleas.

But my heart was stone. Last time, she’d begged for forgiveness, sworn to be a true sister. I’d let
her into my room, and she’d murdered me.
“Actually, I should thank you, Ava,” I said, taking Mason’s hand. “If it weren’t for you, I might
never have grown strong enough to survive.”
We walked away, leaving her screams fading behind us.
