Chapter 7

Jenna followed Julian all the way back to the Prescott estate, but no matter how she begged and played the

victim, he was set on throwing her out.

When she realized everything was about to slip through her fingers, she stopped fighting and asked for one

last thing, that he share a final dinner with her so they could end it cleanly. Julian stayed silent for a long

time before he finally agreed.

At the table, Jenna wore cool, understated makeup that echoed Claire’s, and she’d slipped into the same

white dress Claire had worn the day Julian first met her. He wanted to tell her to change, but the wounded

look in her eyes kept him quiet.

She raised her glass to thank him for all the help he’d given her over the years, and the more she talked, the

more the tears spilled, until it was hard not to feel sorry for her. Julian swallowed, downed a glass of wine,

and kept eating as if he hadn’t noticed.

For reasons he couldn’t name, his grip on the knife and fork grew unsteady, and Jenna’s face kept sliding

over Claire’s until the two blurred together.

Before he knew it, they were tumbling onto the bed, his hand cupping that familiar face.

“Claire,” he rasped, “baby, please don’t leave me, okay?” The face nodded, and excitement surged through him

as he lunged forward.

A heartbeat later they hit the mattress together, and the room filled with the rasp of fabric and ragged

breathing.

Just as Jenna thought her plan had worked, the bedroom door blew open with a bang.

Grandma Evelyn stood there with the butler, his assistant, and a wall of security behind her.

At her command, the naked Jenna was dragged off the bed and thrown to the floor, while the butler dumped

a bucket of water over Julian.

Before he could get a word out, his grandmother flung a thick file of printouts straight into his face.

“You idiot,” she snapped. “You damn bastard. You got burned once and still didn’t learn.”

“You really thought our rivals drugged you,” she said. “You really thought it was a coincidence she showed up

at the perfect moment.”

“She dosed you herself to lure you,” she said, voice like ice. “She even used your phone to text Claire, so she’d walk in and catch you.”

“That sweet, innocent Jenna you’ve been coddling is the executioner who destroyed your family,” she said. “And you helped kill your own baby for her, and you hurt your wife.”

With the evidence laid out in plain sight, there was nowhere left to hide.

Shaking, Jenna crawled on her knees to the bedside. “Julian, I’m sorry,” she cried. “I did something

unforgivable because I love you, and I wanted to have you just once.”

“I won’t ever do it again,” she pleaded. “Please, for William’s sake, forgive me.”

The photos of her spiking the drink were clear as day, and Julian felt as if a knife had turned his heart to

pulp.

He saw himself shielding Jenna and shoving Claire without thinking, saw Claire’s body soaked in blood, and

saw the tiny, formed life they had lost along with the hopeless look in her eyes.

Blood suddenly burst from his mouth.

He launched himself off the bed, eyes bloodshot, and kicked Jenna again and again. “You bitch,” he roared.

“You should die.”

The guards rushed in and restrained him while he fought like a man possessed.

Grandma Evelyn glanced at Jenna crumpled on the floor, spat in disgust, and left without looking back.

Julian’s eyes turned dark and vicious.

Half an hour later, Julian forced a bottle of heavily spiked red wine down Jenna’s throat with his own hands.

“You like drugging people,” he said coldly. “You like being taken, so I’ll make you regret ever crossing me,

Jenna.”

They hauled her into a windowless basement and strapped her down, her arms and legs bound tight. Outside the door, a line stretched so far she couldn’t see the end.

Her body went limp, and she screamed through sobs, “Julian, I’m sorry. You can’t do this to me.”

“You said you loved my body,” she wailed. “You can’t let other people ruin me.”

Julian looked at her like she was nothing. “More people will love that body than you can count,” he said.

He turned to leave, and Jenna suddenly shrieked, “Don’t, Julian, I’m pregnant,” she shrieked.

“I’m carrying your baby. I’ll die if you do this. Let me go, and let me atone for what happened to Claire’s baby.

okay?”

Julian paused, the chill in his eyes only deepening, and he didn’t turn around.

“A dirty little side piece like you doesn’t deserve to have my baby,” he said. “They’ll take care of getting rid of

that baby for you, and I won’t let even a trace of you keep Claire from coming back to me.”

Jenna trembled as someone lunged at her, and she thrashed and screamed, “No! No! Get away from me!”

“Julian, you animal,” she shrieked. “You’re the one who let me hurt her. You protected me every time, and the

one who really hurt her was you.”

“You think this will make Claire come back,” she hissed. “You’re dreaming, and she’ll never forgive you.”

Julian went still for a beat. “If you’re miserable enough,” he said flatly, “she’ll forgive me.”
