Chapter 2
The moment my uncle stepped out, the gentle look he’d worn a second ago turned sharp and poisonous
He didn’t mention me dating at all.
He just drove his boot straight into my chest like he’d been waiting to do it.
“Trash,” he snarled. “You’re this old and still thinking about dating? You think you deserve it?”
My aunt happened to visit our house to see my uncle. She saw what was happening and gave him an earful,
but after my dad took her into the study, she also told me not to think about getting married. Otherwise, she
would directly poison me.
I found it strange-what could be in my dad’s study that made everyone who went in there change their
attitude toward me so drastically?
Even my sister, with whom I’d always had a close bond, told me not to get married. She said living alone and
free was much better.
She even secretly burned all the photos of me with my ex-boyfriends and blacklisted and deleted their
contacts from my phone. She refused to let me see or talk to any man.
I couldn’t stop thinking about it, tossing and turning, unable to sleep.
This whole situation felt so bizarre.
But no matter what, at least my mom was on my side.
She ran three restaurants, though.
She was busy from dawn until midnight, barely stopping to breathe, and she couldn’t monitor how everyone
treated me at the house.
After each breakup, I cried, begged, and fought, yet none of it mattered.
I
Disappointment poured in so heavy it felt like something inside my chest had split open.
Wind from the window slipped in and iced the hole.
My dad shot me a look full of contempt, then dropped onto the couch and turned the TV up like I didn’t exist.
I walked over and stood in front of him, looking serious. “Dad, tell me the truth. Why are you doing this to
me? Did I do something to you?”
“Am I in your way? We’re family. If there’s a misunderstanding, why can’t we talk it out? Why does it have to
be like this?”
He didn’t even glance at me, his eyes glued to the TV-cold and blank.
“I told you,” he said. “You’re not allowed to date or get married. If you disobey me, I’ll kill you.”

Then he slowly turned his head, the dark of his pupils sliding toward the corners like something twisted was
peeking out.
A chill crawled up my spine.
He wasn’t joking. He stood up and grabbed a butcher knife from the kitchen, coming at me like a maniac.
I was terrified and rushed into my room, locking the door behind me. I quickly called my best friend Sophia Wilson to help me call the police.
The police arrived at my house shortly after, with Sophia following right behind.
A female officer immediately subdued my dad, throwing the butcher knife far away. I finally let out a breath and came out of my room.
“Mr. Stone, you are suspected of attempted murder. Please come with us to the police station for
questioning!”
Despite being arrested, my dad William Stone remained utterly disdainful, showing no fear whatsoever.
When Sophia saw the knife marks on my arm, her face went pale, and tears streamed down her face.
She punched my dad with all her strength, furious beyond measure.
“Are you out of your mind? That’s your daughter! You’re actually willing to kill her just to stop her from
getting married?”
She buried her face in her hands, crying uncontrollably.
I knew that if the police weren’t there, she would’ve probably gone straight at my dad to beat him up.
The truth is, there are people in this world who genuinely want the best for me and want to see me happy.
The police remained serious and asked my dad what his purpose was. But he showed no remorse, his face
unchanged.
Sophia stepped forward, raising her phone.
“I can provide evidence. Since Courtney was twenty, she’s had five boyfriends, all of whom were manipulated into breaking up with her by her dad.”
“He even told them to physically and verbally abuse Courtney! I have all the photos of her injuries that she sent me. Those assholes deserve to be punished!”
As soon as she finished speaking, my dad let out a weird laugh, his expression twisted and terrifying.
He signaled for the police to release his hold on him, then turned to Sophia.
“I’ll go with you, but first, I need to grab some important evidence from the study. If you’re worried I’ll run, you
can all come in with me.”
