Chapter 4
“Sophia, do you even hear yourself? You’re my best friend.”
She slapped my hand away like I was disgusting.
Her expression stayed flat. “I mean every word. Who told you to keep asking for this?”
It felt like something tore inside my chest.
This was the girl I had grown up with and had trusted with every secret. I couldn’t believe she had turned into
this.
When I was a child and made a mistake, my dad would punish me by not letting me eat.
Sophia would sneak around, holding a slice of pizza, hiding by my door, and slipping it to me so I wouldn’t go
hungry.
She once told me she would always consider me her best friend and would always treat me well.
Not long ago, I held her hand while we were out for a walk.
I asked, “Sophia, what if I really never get married?”
Her eyes were full of passion and warmth. “It doesn’t matter if you never get married. Didn’t I buy a house?
You can move in with me.”
“I won’t get married either, and I’ll take care of you for the rest of my life. We can adopt a child, and from then
on, we’ll be a family!”
She always told me not to be sad, saying that those men who changed their minds weren’t truly in love with me. She was glad I didn’t get married.
But now, what was the difference between her and those men?
My heart felt like it was struck by a heavy hammer, the pain spreading through my whole body. A thorn of
doubt twisted in my mind, suffocating me.
I couldn’t help but wonder-what kind of power did my dad’s study hold that could change the attitude of
everyone who went inside, even the people who loved and cared for me?
They would suddenly turn on me and even wish for my death.
After that day, I completely cut off contact with Sophia. We became strangers.
I hadn’t been physically hurt, but the emotional damage was enormous. For a long time after, I saw a
psychologist, trying to regain the happiness I once had.
My dad and sister didn’t care about me at all; they only knew how to exploit and control me.
Then, I finally got the chance for my mom to take her annual vacation. Every year, she took some time off to

rest and spend quality time with the family.
When she found out I had been seeing a psychologist, she felt terribly guilty.
She came to my room, standing by my bed, looking at me with vacant eyes, tears streaming down her face
She hugged me tightly. “Courtney, this is all my fault. I’ve talked to your dad so many times, but he just
doesn’t listen.”
My mom’s expression was filled with pain, as if she wanted to endure the psychological torment herself
instead of me.
I knew how hard it was for her.
If it weren’t for her love, I probably wouldn’t have been able to hold on.
Whenever my dad deliberately scolded or hit me, my mom would always step in without hesitation, standing
up to him.
She and my dad had known and loved each other for decades, and she understood his stubbornness.
She had always tried to make up for his neglect and mistreatment of me by being extra good to me.
But she ran her own store from morning to night, and by the time she came home, I was already asleep.
Still, I knew she cared for me.
I could always feel her love, even though she was often busy.
That’s why, even though she wasn’t physically present, I still felt like there was someone in the world who loved me and wouldn’t push me away for some strange reason.
I had thought about moving out, but my dad watched me closely every day, afraid that once I left the house, I
would secretly marry some man.
He clearly stated that if I dared move out, he would make sure to torment me until I wished I were dead.
The image of the study flashed through my mind, and I shuddered.
I wrapped my arm around my mom’s and softly cuddled up to her.
“Mom, do you always listen to everything I say?”
She gently patted my head and smiled, “Of course, Courtney is my favorite daughter. Whatever you say, I’ll listen to you.”
I looked at her earnestly. “Then, you can never go into Dad’s study. Can you promise me?”
“What’s in your dad’s study?”
“I don’t know! But you can’t go in! Please, can you promise me?”

“Don’t worry, sweetheart. If you say I shouldn’t go in, I won’t. I promise’
“Mom, you’re so good to me
“Of course. I’ll always be good to you, Courtney.” Her face was serious, and I truly believed she wasn’t lying.
If she stayed out of my dad’s study, he wouldn’t be able to brainwash her, and she would still love me just as
much.
She also mentioned that my dad’s temper was stubborn and that I shouldn’t take it too seriously.
She had already set up a blind date for me with someone well-suited, saying, “What kind of parents wouldn’t
want their daughter to get married? It’s absurd.”
I was deeply relieved and agreed to meet the person on the weekend.
But the next day, my mom told me the blind date had been canceled.
We had planned to have breakfast together that morning, but she didn’t wake me up, and I slept until noon.
I thought she had something urgent at the store, but when I opened the door, she threw a bowl from the dining table at my head.
The impact made my forehead hurt, and blood started dripping down onto the floor.
